Players who led neither the AL nor the NL that year. A player who spent time in both leagues could lead the majors, but not either league. He's included.

Brady Anderson, 50 in 1996 (behind McGwire's 52 in the AL that year), is missing. So is Vinny Castilla (46 in 1998).

Castilla should be 1998, not 1996.

It's funny that Sammy Sosa is the only player in major league history to have three 60 home run seasons and not one time in those three seasons did he lead his league. Pretty hilarious really.

Great quiz, but McGwire's 1997 season is misleading seeing as how he was traded midseason. He hit 58 home runs to lead the majors, but Griffey led the AL with 56. It's up to your discretion but McGwire hit 34 of his home runs in the AL before being traded, which doesn't match up with these guys.

I read the title of your quiz again and I basically take back what I said. McGwire did in fact have a season where he hit a huge amount of home runs without leading a league. Great Job!

@Mahavishnu_Fury, and there have only been six times in baseball history that a player hit more than 61 home runs in a season. Three of them were Sosa. The other three were even higher totals in the same three seasons.

As mentioned, the Mcgwire 97 season is very difficult to remember, because it's a trick question, technically correct but only based on bafflingly specific wording in your quiz title. He led the sport in homers that year. I'm not done playing yet, I suspect there may another one or two trick ones. Not fun, really.

@ChicagoRed--is there a better way to phrase it? I considered having it as a bonus answer at first, but given that I wanted the quiz to be for anyone that led their respective leagues in HRs, it didn't make sense as a bonus answer since it's accurate. The quiz instructions also allude to that season (without naming him specifically). Also, with ~93% of people getting him, does it matter? But thanks for the feedback--if there's a way to improve it, I'll do it. The purpose wasn't to mislead; his season was just an anomaly.
