| For everyone wondering about the lack of captains from '41-'76: After Gehrig died of ALS, Joe McCarthy (the manager of the Yankees at the time) declared that there would never be another Yankee captain. This held true until George Steinbrenner decided to reinstate the position by awarding the captaincy to Munson. Had it not been for Gehrig's untimely death, I highly suspect that some of the Yankee greats who played between '41 and '76, such as Dimaggio and Berra, would have held the captaincy at some point. |
