Not as cool as another old time shortstop, Jack Glasscock.

It's pretty funny that Chase was their first captain since he was possibly the most corrupt player in Major League history.

Not only that, Chase actually managed them for a bit too.

Yeah, I wouldn't trust Hal Chase as captain of a prison team, much less the Yankees.

You'd think after Gehrig and munson nobody would want to be captain.

It's pretty incredible to me that Joe DiMaggio was never captain of the Yankees given that one of his nicknames was the Yankee Clipper.

With all the great players who played during the time, I can't help but wonder why there were no captains from 1941-1976.

Gehrig and Guidry continued to serve as captains after the end of their careers? What?

Slightly suprised there is no Mickey Mantle on this list, moderately suprised there is no Phil Rizzuto on this list, and all out shocked that there is no Yogi Berra on this list.

For everyone wondering about the lack of captains from '41-'76: After Gehrig died of ALS, Joe McCarthy (the manager of the Yankees at the time) declared that there would never be another Yankee captain. This held true until George Steinbrenner decided to reinstate the position by awarding the captaincy to Munson. Had it not been for Gehrig's untimely death, I highly suspect that some of the Yankee greats who played between '41 and '76, such as Dimaggio and Berra, would have held the captaincy at some point.

I don't know about Guidry, but I'm guessing they kept Gehrig listed as captain after he quit playing as an honorary gesture, respecting his great career and his terminal illness.

I agree with Walt. I'm a Met fan but this is a great idea. Not to jump on the bandwagon but please feel to try my quiz on NL MVP Runners-Up from 1990 to 2008. It's at http://www.sporcle.com/games/FastEddie/NL_MVP_RunnersUp_1990_2008 It's my first quiz so feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure what the deal is with Guidry, although doing a bit of searching, I found that his plaque in Monument Park (which can be found here http://gonyc.about.com/od/photogalleries/ig/Yankee-Stadium-Pictures/Ron-Guidry.htm) indicates that he was only captain until 1988 (when his career ended), which makes more sense.

I find it ironic that Randolph captained the Yankees and then went on to manage the Mets.

Babe Ruth was actually only captain for less then a week. Five days in he got ejected from a game, threw dirt at an ump, and chased a heckler in the stands (I believe w/ a bat).

According to your source page, you are missing two captains, Clark Griffith 1903 to 1907 and Kid Elberfeld 1907 to 1909.
