Poor John Rutledge, finishing 20 percentage points behind anyone else. And I only remembered him because Jon Stewart said in America the Book that he accused the CIA of putting a mind-control chip in his head.

Maybe you should make people answer in order (but allow skips), because I got about 4 of these answers just by typing in all the President surnames in rapid succession. Otherwise, great quiz!

I'm confused by the Civil War border states. Are these states that fought for the south that bordered states that fought for the north?

@singin185 In the Civil War, border states were the slave states that did not secede. More here

Very good quiz. Not sure I would count West Virginia, after all it was a state born out of the civil war and the mountainous areas of Virginia that opposed secession.

West Virginia probably needs to be clarified. Although if one is smart enough to know that fact, then one will probably type Virginia, also

Quiz accepts "mexican" for mexican-american war & "1812" for war of 1812, but not "spanish" for spanish-american war. Please fix.

Could you accept 'treasury secretary' for 'secretary of the treasury'? Very good quiz, I'm from UK and have learnt a fair bit here!

West Virginia simply wasn't a state... until 1863, well after the significance of being a "border" state had passed. If you want to count it, you should at least include a hint about its newer status.

Delaware doesn't border Virginia - Maryland comes down the peninsula and goes all the way to the ocean south of Delaware (Ocean City area)

Category should be renamed "Presidents never to have VP" since both Madison and Jackson had no VP at some point in their Presidencies, making them the first two presidents without a VP.

As an Englishman with a mediocre knowledge of US states and an inferior knowledge of presidents I consider 17/43 a decent score.

Also should be titled Union Border States since the Confederate States has border states too.

Delaware didn't border a confederate state although slavery was legal there until the end of the war. I think it should say "Union Slave States."

Although the quiz doesn't tell you this, I believe "border states" is kind of a term of art that means "Union states where slavery was legal". It's just not just those states that border the states that seceded. But it's not really reasonable for the quiz to expect you to know that.

I don't understand the category name "Original 13 states to secede" when there's only four listed and they were all both Confederate states and original British colonies. Are you talking about the Revolution or the Civil War? At least change the 13 to 4 if nothing else.

I don't know anything about American history but I think it means which 4 of the original 13 states is the result of a split. Not sure, but in a secessionist war a part of the country tries to gain independence from the larger country, like in the Biafra- Nigeria case.

bsd987 & EssessNine97 - the term 'Border States' is what is used to refer to Southern-leaning slave states that didn't leave the union, it's the term Civil War historians have applied to these states, not a strictly geographical term.

@ 21guns, meeks516: original 13 states to secede is talking about those of the original 13 colonies that seceded from the union when the Civil War began.

Maybe put "border states" in quotes to show that's it a special term?

Arizona was admittied into the United States during the Mexican-American war in the Gadsden Purchase of 1854. New Mexico was also admitted into the United Sates during the Mexican-American war in 1846. Clearly not the 20th century.

@jz103 - The question clearly isn't asking when the land that currently comprises New Mexico was incorporated into the United States. It's asking which states were admitted to the Union in the 20th Century. In this case - 1912.

Tennessee should also be included as a border state. It certainly fits that definition better than Delaware!
