A lot of unnecessary confusion. Home state is distinct from birth state; it is, as the note, which was worded differently by the admins than it was originally by me, the state of residency. The source site, which is definitely legitimate, and also very good, includes the home state for each candidate in each election. Obviously, when making the quiz, I was going to follow my source (although I made some faulty assumptions, too, most of which I, or others, caught early). So a lot of these comments I am dismissing out of hand, and would dismiss even if I still had control over the quiz.
One exception is fred_towes, who thought his comment out instead of just throwing out a name and state. Unfortunately (because it means I erred), Fred, by the standard I just set for myself, Nixon should be in New York for this quiz. (And thanks for your comment, too, ajdinkin. Nixon was in NY in '72 as well, however. I did check.) Given Reagan (surprised nobody mentioned [post-publication; one person did in the archives] that he was born in Illinois), most people should still be able to get California.
