With logic puzzles being fashionable on Sporcle these days, here's another one to test your grey matter, that requires no real knowledge other than adding a few numbers. Hope you have fun, and I'll post a step-by-step answer to this shortly!

Typo in the instructions: categories, not catergories (also capitalize Sporcle considering it's a pronoun). I'm stuck after I put in music what do I do?

Thanks for the typo corrections. The step after Television is definitely the hardest step in this puzzle. Work out what is in row C, and specifically what is in C5.

Literature, Television, and Just For Fun are all ten letters. You need to make it clear that these aren't the column with all the same number of letters, or else Literature could be in B1 and A5/C5 could be any of Science/Sports, Gaming/Geography, or Holiday/History. Also, given how important letter counts in the categories are, would it be too much to ask for you to list them all in the instructions?

If you go through the solution, you will see that when you get the TELEVISION clue, logical inference tells you that LITERATURE is in row C. It therefore cannot be in B1, and the first column cannot be the column with the same number of letters. If you enter LITERATURE in B1 then that is a 'guess', not a logical working out.

By God, you're right!! I therefore deleted my comment so I wouldn't look so much like a lunkhead. I bow to you on this one. Good quiz. I still don't think you should give the letter counts in the instructions, I think getting them is part of the puzzle. Good one.

I'm glad you can see the logic in it. I realise this isn't the easiest logic quiz but I hope my logic is sound. I agree that counting the letters in a word is something I can leave to Sporclers to do themselves!

I liked this, but I'm not sure I get your comment-clues. After TV the next I placed was Science, and then Miscellaneous, which gave me the "congratulations" message when I still had at least 6 categories to find. Nice balance of inference and calculation though.

I do think you need to add the phrase "only if" to the Religion clue. Right now it says A is true if B and C is true. B and C being false does not mean A is false. If you paraphrase it may be clearer: If B and C, then A does not mean a false value for B and C means Not A.

@parklife - not sure how you got the Miscellaneous answer so quickly. What was your working out? It should be one of the last ones to work out, and that's why it says congratulations!

@pigheaded1, you're right, 'only if' would read clearer than just 'if'.

I am stuck after Television because I see two possible scenarios: I know you somehow Literature "must" be in row C, but unless I'm missing something, with the four I have filled in (A1, A4, B3, C1), and even though it's denied here it seems like there's still a way for it to be in B1 as well that I can't seem to rule out: 13-13-10-9-8 also adds up to 53 (Television, Entertainment, Miscellaneous, Religion, Geography), and the ones for A5 and C5 (clue A1) can be Geography in C5 and Gaming in A5. Sports could be somewhere in the second row (satisfying A4), Literature could be in B1 (satisfying B3). Am I missing something?

@Zak6009: I was going to point out how you were wrong, but I think you (and dollymix) are correct, unless I am missing a logic imperative. If so, the B3 clue should have something like added like "(not the first column)".

And... I just looked at your walkthrough, seems like the hole is still missed: You last paragraph in step three says that the same-length words have to be either 6, 7, or 10 letters. Okay. The following paragraph (in the next step) concludes that both 13 letter words must be in row C, and that the other two must be 10 and 7, or 9 and 8. Okay, yes, got that. But THEN the next paragraph says "The clue in B3 tells us one word in row C must be a 6 or 7 letter word. Since when? When did the notion of 10-10-10 get ruled out? If that's satisfied then we don't need there to be a 6 or 7 letter in row C.

PS, @dollymix, it can't be Sports/Science because we know Sports can't be in row A (clue A4) or row C (clue C1, has six letters). But the others it surely can.

@zak6009. Yup, you're absolutely right. I understand what you are saying and I did not spot that mistake, it looks like I got even myself confused with this puzzle. Thank you for pointing it out, it's great that these comments are used to iron out problems like this. I shall make corrections asap!

@ hello: I really hope this doesn't give things away, and please either vote me down or tell me to delete if it does, but my order of discover was: Just for Fun, Language, Music, Television, Science, Religion, History, Holiday, Movies, Sports, Miscellaneous, Literature, Entertainment, Gaming, Geography

Right, I've swapped around Television, Religion and Language, so that the first column cannot be all 10 letter words. I think that way is better than stating 'not the first column' although it is a good suggestion too pigheaded1. Now I've just got to change the walkthrough solution!

@parklife, it's fine to give things away in the comments, besides, if someone wants the solution, they would look at the solution given in the link anyway. I follow how you get all the way to Movies and then Sports (same as my walkthrough) but then how do you get Miscellaneous from that clue?

Thanks for fixing it... though now I'm stuck at 9/15, this time at a paradox... there's no way A2 or C5's clues can be right, unless something else isn't. I'd have to guess to see what the actual answer is, but there have to be at least two lying about something...

Just tested via guessing - both those clues are lying. Now Column 2 and 3 both have 25 letters, and none of the columns are in alphabetical order. Though, I'm guessing they weren't this is a result of swapping answers around... something you should be careful with when editing logic puzzles. It's much safer to edit clues than to switch answers, but sometimes the latter works too. I don't know what they were before, but instead of swapping answers, doing what you said a few comments about and just changing B3's clue to add "not the first column" would have probably been a better bet.

Thanks Zak6009 for looking over the quiz and correcting. I was changing the clues (dangerous I know) probably during your testing. I tried to take it offline for a while to do so, but found I couldn't then test it. I'm pretty sure I've finally corrected it all, and changed the clues in A2 and C5 accordingly, and everything is finally working logically!!

You're right I could have just taken the easy route and added in the comment in B3 'not the first column' but it would have made that clue a bit too wordy, and definitely look like a last minute addition. So I chose the very long and hard way of correcting it.
