| I don't know why Maritimer is being downvoted: those 'y's are vowels in those words. 'Y' is generally considered a consonant when pronounced /j/ like in the word 'yes' (/jɛs/) or 'youth' (/juːθ/) but considered a vowel when pronounced like a vowel in Italy (/ɪ.tə.li/) or Uruguay (/jʊɹ.ə.ɡweɪ/ or /jʊɹ.ə.ɡwaɪ/). English is full of spellings that are remnants of old pronunciations and foreign origins (look up 'ghoti' on Wiki), so it's hard to make rules about written letters and spoken phonemes but it seems most people learn the vowels are "A, E, I, O, U and sometimes Y and W". Italy and Uruguay would be cases of those sometimes. I think it would be best to make them bonuses. |
