GameRankings is a site that collects and combines all reviews for a videogame and takes an average of the score to create an average rating for the game. Only games with a minimum of 20 reviews have been included in this list. Ports are accepted, but remakes are not. Games based on other media such as movies are not accepted but may be listed as bonus answers provided they would have made the list otherwise.

Advance Wars is part of the Nintendo Wars series; Famicom Wars and Game Boy Wars were released in Japan only, but it was still part of an established series. Still, interesting quiz, takes an old trick and adds a new edge.

I forgot about the Nintendo Wars series. I'll move Advance Wars out of this list and consider putting it as a bonus, seeing as it least has a new title. Cheers.

Great, great quiz- excellent idea, and it really makes you rack your brain for unique games. I'm surprised by some games that don't make the list- "Shadow Complex", "Ratchet & Clank", "Portal" (maybe not enough individual reviews?), and "Shenmue" come to mind.

Kicking222: Cheers. Glad you liked it. Shenmue just missed out, as did Ratchet and Clank and Shadow Complex. The rating for Portal was also surprisingly too low and just missed out, but The Orange Box is a bonus answer.

Also Shadow of the Colossus is a prequel to Ico and so should not be listed here. Nice quiz though.

Their ranking system is highly biased towards recent games. You aren't going to find 20 online reviews of Super Mario Brothers or Pokemon Red/Blue, even though they'll easily top every game on this list.

tcr: thanks for that. I got rid of it. I always thought that Shadow was more a spiritual successor than a prequel or sequel but looks like I was wrong lol. @Windsword: You make a good point in that obviously the original Donkey Kong, Pacman, Metroid etc. aren't going to make the list, although I doubt they would necessarily top EVERY game on here even if they were. As for Pokemon, Pokemon Red has 19 reviews and its rating is still below every title listed here.

And also, "Super Mario Bros." wasn't a new franchise- "Mario Bros." predated it by two years.

I only got two right (Gears of War and LittleBigPlanet), because I didn't know that the first game of a series is allowed. -.-

the inclusion of Rock Band is a little odd since it's essentially a spinoff of Guitar Hero (developed by Harmonix, the original developers of Guitar Hero). Guitar Hero itself (as well as Rock Band) was heavily influenced by Guitar Freaks and Drum Mania, but I suppose it's an original entry into the series.

I thought about leaving Rock Band out for that very reason, but decided it could stay seeing as it was a new series with a new publisher (and I think it was the first game to feature the 'band' concept). Other similar cases: Alpha Centauri is essentially a spinoff of Civilisation and Bioshock is the spiritual successor to System Shock 2...still, I thought they also deserved to be on the list, especially when you consider that several sports games have made it.

i'm dumbfounded that diablo and starcraft didn't make the list, let alone WoW. In fact there isn't a single blizzard title on this list! odd since they are usually regarded for producing such quality titles

I too am dumbfounded at the lack of Starcraft and Diablo. Certainly they would rank higher than nearly any other PC game (excepting maybe Half-Life)?

halo above half-life is depressing. Also, World of Warcraft is based on the Warcraft series of games.
