What's up with the word soccer? Well, it's a word of British origin, used as a slang shortening of the term "AsSOCCiation Football", which was used to distinguish the game from "Rugby Football" while the games were evolving and diverging. In England, the language evolved to the point where "football" meant Association Football, and Rugby Football was generally simply called Rugby. Meanwhile, in the US, the branch of the game that became Rugby elsewhere took a somewhat different path and became the more popular variant. As in Britain, the more popular variant was eventually called "football" exclusively, forcing the other branch variant to adopt a different name to be distinguished. Soccer was the natural word to use, as it remained in use to some extent.
The games evolved. The language evolved. That's it. |
