| The issue of Charles II date is contentious. Although some Royalists at the time considered his father's death in 1649 to be the beginning of his reign, the more common date used is when he was recognized by parliament and actually assumed the powers of the monarchy in 1660. From 1649 until 1660, he was actually in France, knowing he could not safely return to England while the Cromwells were still ruling. However, I think it does not much matter in the long run; most quizzers who would know well enough to put 1649 for Charles II would probably also know the alternative answer of 1660. |
