That's amazing when you think that Ireland was a nation that people emigrated from rather than immigrated to even a within the last few decades.

These kind of quizzes are always just "name all the countries that you can". Polish foreign would also be appreciated

Not that suprising. Ireland (the Republic) has had an economic boom since the 1990s until the present economic troubles (where it has run into problems), and has had huge population increases, mainly due to immigration. Being an EU member has certainly helped that, too.

The fact that there is a Top-20 countries from wich most people emigrate to Ireland, does not mean Ireland is an immigration country! The numbers are very low if you'd ask me. Besides, keeping track of origin by the government seems very 30s/40s Continental European to me...

Since the mid nineties, Ireland has been a country of net immigration. Since the downturn it has decreased while emigration has increased but it's still net immigration. And according to the latest census (the one used in this quiz) over 10% of the Irish population were foreign born so it's hardly a low figure. Also, pretty much every country's census keeps track of the country of origin of its population so it's not uncommon.

Good quiz and no. 20 how could I forget? I read an article during the world cup about a town where a large immigrant popoulation worked in either a meat or fish processing plant had come from this country and stayed despite recent economic problems.

I'm surprised by the large number of Lithuanians and Latvians. However the Polish and Romanians seem to be all over EU. Not too many Turkish people in Ireland, then - due to religious differences?

It's nice to see the large number of Poles in Ireland. They have more in common historically and culturally than one might think.

@Foyherald. The town you are thinking of is Gort in Co Galway, where about 20% of the population is Brazilian. They originally came to work in a meat plant.

Nice quiz, very multicultural...coming from just over the water in Isle of Man I can say the breakdown is fairly similar, I might try to draw up that quiz!

@Adam Bishop. People mistakenly call the Roma "Romanians" regardless of where they are actually from; predominantly Slovakia.

@schulace - "Black Irish" is how the people of Montserrat (near Antigua) in the Caribbean describe themselves. Many of these islanders have Irish surnames due to the presence of Irish indentured servants who fled there from nearby Nevis. They officially celebrate St. Patrick's day there to commemerate the failed 1798 slave rebellion. As an Irishman myself I had the pleasure of spending time in Montserrat and was the whitest (or pinkest) person on the island. Good quiz!!

@Ireland I dont think blaming people from other countries who come to Ireland to work is very helpful. Was that not your leader who was a bit drunk on the radio the other morning? Your employment status might have more to do with the eejits ye voted into office the last time and still havent got rid of. Yee Ha!

I am surprised that people are surprised by the large numbers of Lithuanians and Latvians, they come from a poorer country and have free movement of travel to Ireland, so it is fairly logical that would go there. And since this was taken before the financial crisis, then there would have been plenty of jobs.

This wasn't really that hard. Step 1: Name countries close to Ireland. Step 2: Name countries with large populations. Step 3: Name countries people are always trying to get out of.

The common thread here seems to be either geographical proximity or a high percentage of Catholics (Philippines, Poland, Brazil, etc.).
