Correctly named answers will show up below
Answers MUST be guessed in order
EX. 10^2 = 100 because 10^2 means 10x10 which equals 100. 10^3 = 1000 because 10^3 means 10x10x10 which equals 1000. Good luck.

Please tell me what you think of this little math quiz. Vote this up if you think I should "force answer in order" or vote this down if you think I should "force answer in order but allow skip" or if you think I shouldn't force answer in order at all, just leave a comment below telling me. Thanks

I think this is a rare one that works without allowing skipping.

I think skipping should be allowed. For those who don't know, say, 4^4 but do know 5^1, etc. (In case you're wondering, yes, that is where I left off.)

Yes, there was a game published like this. It needs more time, though. Not everybody does these games using a calculator.

@kagomeshuko: It would take much longer if I had to use a calculator!

A great game just as it is, the stats pretty much verify this :)

I did it in my head and finished with 14 seconds left. I'd say answer in order but allow skip. I'd expand it past 6.

Between cheaters and those of us who keep doing it until they get it done, the stats will be fairly meaningless for this one.

Took me 24 seconds to do the first 24. And then it took me 18 seconds just to do 6^5. Good puzzle.

216*6 = (200 + 16)*6 = 1200 + 96 1296*6 = (1300 - 4)*6 = 7800 - 24 just like they (should have) taught you in grammar school. It's sad when you see some youngster (that's anybody younger than me, about 2/3 of humanity) calculating a restarant tip on his cell phone calculator app. Learn to do some mental math. It's good for your brain.

@Tommy_C: If you're going to be a giant douchewad about people who can't quickly calculate 216*6 in their heads, learn to spell "restaurant" correctly. It's good for your brain.

@Tommy_C Calculate a restaurant tip? Is there some sort of concrete rule in other countries that it has to be at least so much? I usually go for the "just over a 10th" rule. Just divide by ten and add a bit on. By the way, great quiz. Mental arithmetic seems a lot harder under time pressure.

I actually agree with Tommy C. They don't teach kids to do mental math like that anymore, we just use our calculators. I'm in Algebra II/Trigonometry and I consider myself pretty good at mental math but even I couldn't do that fast.

@sandpit: that reminded me of a kind of Murphy's law, "The first 90% of the task takes 90% of the time, and the last 10% takes the other 90%". I didn't remember where I had read it, but later I found: it's from The Book of Lists, a bestseller of the '70s.

@dancastro - Murphy's law is that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. The 80-20 principle is often applied to tasks suggesting that the first 80% of it will be completed in 20% of the time (and hence the last 20% in the remaining 80%).

Good quiz. For anyone struggling with the last one: I did 1300 x 6, then took away 4 x 6. It's much easier than 1296 x 6.

What a weird histogram. Usually the ones that encourage practice have a bulge at the high end, but this one is all over the place. Andyp99x is totally right... darn it.

@schmollie: that's why I said "a kind of" Murphy's law. There are lots of sequels to the original one (like the chance of the bread falling with the buttered side down, that is directly proportional to the cost of the carpet). Your enunciation is logically correct (if the first 80% takes 20% of the time, the last 20% must take 80%), while "the last 10% takes the other 90%" is absurd but the joke (that intends to stress that nothing is completed in the scheduled time) is precisely there.

@zamboni: The strange histogram will be because people will run out of time trying to work out x^5, then get powers 1-4 quite quickly, so people get lumped in certain brackets.
