	Haiti's earthquake was approx. 7.0 on the scale. It was the level of poverty and lack of resources available in Haiti that made it so devastating.

	@professor88: Well, magnitudes prior to 1875 (date of the first seismograph) probably need a notation that they are approximate. My understanding is that the magnitude is calculated based on the observed effects at the time. For instance, the 1700 Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake resulted in a tsunami that was recorded in Japan (http://earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/histor/15-19th-eme/1700/1700-eng.php) Apparently the earthquake also left behind evidence in the geological record as it caused major coastal subsidence in which forests were covered by younger sediments.

	Portugal made sense to me, not because I know anything about faults there, but I figured any documented earthquake from 1755 had a better chance of being in Europe than anywhere else.

	@atlrower: It's generally true that the more populated a place the more likely good records would have been kept and, sad to say, the more developed a place the easier it is to see the damage and therefore have the evidence to support an estimate of the magnitude. But probably no nation on earth has more experience with earthquakes and the resulting tsunamis than Japan.

	I started out by just typing as many countries as I could think of that were on or near fault lines. After I ran out of ideas there, I looked at the dates that were left, and realized that 1755 had to be the Lisbon earthquake that shows up in Candide.

	I thought that the New Madrid quakes of 1811-1812 would have made it considering that the flow of the Mississippi river was reversed for a time and that there was some damage done as far away as Boston and South Carolina. Suprised to see that they were not even 8.0. We are in big trouble if that fault line really lets loose now.

	@bart122333: I think that's a common misconception. Earthquakes can occur (and do) nearly everywhere on earth, it's just that they are much more likely to occur along plate boundaries such as those around the Pacific Ring of Fire. Intraplate earthquakes are those that occur away from the edges of tectonic plates and are usually less frequent and possibly less severe than interplate earthquakes that occur along plate boundaries. The Eurasian Plate and the African Plate border each other in the Mediterranean Sea passing through the Gibraltar Strait into the Atlantic Ocean and therefore Portugal is in fact not very far from that tectonic plate boundary.

	Also worth remembering that the damage is a result not only of the severity, but how close the epicenter is to the surface and to habited areas, the nature of the soils--which can magnify the effects--and the quality of construction. That's besides the issue of whether there is a tsunami, which caused most of the deaths in Japan, and, I believe, many of those in Chile last year.

	The 1775 Lisbon Earthquake nearly destroyed the city. It occurred on All Saints' Day and everyone was in church. Fires broke out, tsunamis crashed the city, it was terrible. The earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 8.5-9.0, the most destructive Europe has ever seen that is known of.
