Please explain why the University of Manchester is dated 2004. I was offered a place there thirty years previously.

In 2004 the "old" University of Manchester merged with UMIST to form a new institution also called University of Manchester. The original University of Manchester was founded in the 19th century, making it actually the oldest of the "red brick" universities.
