Good quiz. If I were a pedant, and I'm not sure there are any non-pedants on Sporcle, I'd say it should be 5 letters or fewer...

@timjames19- Not according to citypopulation.de. I was actually more surprised by the lack of Medan.

I live in Hanoi. THe population is over 6 million. But the city annexed some land a couple years back, so maybe your source is old. However, even before it annexed the land I think it will still qualify.

According to my source, the agglomerations of Hanoi and Medan both had a population of 2,700,000 when the data was collected and as a result would be joint 27th on this list.

shanghai is definitely the most populous city, not tokyo

I think it's done by metro areas. For example, Seoul adds all the satellite cities - Incheon, Ilsan, Suwon etc - to the population size. In Korea, these cities are counted as separate because...well, they're not Seoul and they're in a different county.

Hanoi - according to wikipedia estimated population nearly 6.5 million (2009) - how on earth is that not in the list?

I missed the last two, but then again one shouldn't be there cause Hanoi should, so I guess I only missed one. But nice quiz idea!

I think there needs to be consistency with "metropolitan area" versus "city proper". No way Miami has 5 million people - the city has like 433,000 (Census 2009 estimate). And I also guessed Hanoi. Great concept though.

this is metro area you ding dong. at least change the description and instructions to not say "most populous world cities". tokyo is only 13 million city pop and I know for sure miami doesn't break 1 million

If you read the instructions, it says the data is according to agglomeration size on citypopulations.de. As I stated in the archived comments, Hanoi is listed in the source as having a population of 2.7 million which would put it at 27th on this list.

Your source really does seem to be quite frankly wrong about Hanoi: http://www.lookatvietnam.com/2010/07/hanois-population-reaches-65-million.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanoi and http://english.thesaigontimes.vn/Home/features/general/11786/

@hnofer17: two things: 1. Tokyo is actually the most populous metro in the world. by far. 2. these are five letter cities and to the best of my knowledge, Shanghai has eight letters.

If I'd read "world CITIES" instead of "world CAPITALS," I would've gotten a lot more answers correct. D'oh!

I cannot believe a quiz that uses the citypopulation.de source got published. That source is notoriously inconsistent and inaccurate/incorrect. It considers entire metropolitan areas for U.S. cities while in most countries it judges based only on city proper. It considers Soweto to be an independent city when for 16 years it has been part of Johannesburg city proper. This quiz needs to be taken down and a quiz with an accurate source should replace it.

Annoyed I didn't get Seoul & Accra - otherwise the rest I missed were all Chinese which I guess is fair enough, given that my knowledge of cities outside of Beijing is very poor!Decent quiz.
