I'm pretty sure Taiwan is its own country, and Hong Kong is part of China - it shouldn't have its own answer!

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/hk.html I guess it's pretty tricky to define. However, for this quiz, I was going by the list provided by Forbes Traveler.

There's not much to debate since you've done the right thing and used a source, but you should probably have the category as "destination" rather than "country", and specify that not all answers are countries. The page you posted lists Hong Kong correctly, as a special administrative region of China. That means its a part of China.

@shawnkay I made the edits you suggested. Hope that it's not too vague now. Thanks for your help - it was my first time doing this.

this was confusing to me. I didn't realize you wanted the country, I thought you were looking for specific tourist destinations. You should specify that by 'Destination" you mean country.

Hmm... I tried to make both parties happy, so I hope that my country/destination updates make sense. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to clarify the quiz. Thanks for the input!

This quiz probably has a lot in common with a quiz on the national origins of immigrants to the US over the past several decades - as a lot of this is probably not "vacation" tourism, but "visiting" tourism (i.e. friends and family back in the "home" country). Also, since business travel is included, it skews the numbers since way more people travel on business than for pleasure.

it would be a lot more challenging without the continent clues. as for hong kong and taiwan, they both have separate visa regimes from mainland china, so regardless of whether your political views espouse them as being different from china, my guess is that they'd have different immigration stats.

Seeing Eponymous threw me off just a bit. Couldn't the continent/region be Oceania? Or is that just overkill? either way, really good quiz

Thanks for the comments, everyone. As I said before, I'm using the "country" as listed by Forbes Traveler. @fatbeard - I'll make that change. Thanks for the input!

I say delete the continent column altogether. It will make it a smidge more difficult but Sporclers will get most of the answers anyway.

why the hell do more people visit colombia than brazil? i don't buy the "drugs" answer. i mean, they might send us drugs, but it's not like there are 600,000 Americans going to Colombia to buy coke.

The lack of Russia slightly surprised me, I'd think that more than 585,000 people would go to Moscow or St. Petersburg.

I got everything but Hong Kong, which is a weird answer since it's the only one of the list that's not actually a country.

Yes, there are drugs in Colombia but it doesn't strike me as a pleasnat place to go. The Netherlands are at least somewhat scenic and less dangerous.

Hong Kong is debatable. Most people say it's part of China, but stick to Sporcle recognized countries

@ DonEscamillo --> Excuse me! I find it quite stupid when people debate these obvious FACTS. Yes, if there were more than 585,000 people who went there, they would be on. But they aren't, so don't go complaining.

Americans don't go to Brazil much because it's (1) far away, and (2) very crime ridden and considered unsafe. The US is one of Colombia's largest trading partners (legal goods), and it's much closer. Many of the people traveling between Colombia and the USA are visiting each other rather than vacationing.

I was totally surprised that Bahamas wasn't on here given that almost every cruise ship out of Florida stops there, and there are thousands of people on those ships coming and going every week. But, this is probably why Jamaica rated so high.

I think you've presented this well and done the right thing to stop confusion - I have one criticism: why did you put (Island) for Jamaica? On sporcle, it's standard to include the Caribbean as part of the North American continent, so it's not necessary, and it actually confused me a little, thinking perhaps you meant an island that's not an independent country. Otherwise, good quiz!
