This is a great quiz but I would just love a * tag for the active players. That way you can see a little more information, and have useful information when the quiz has to be updated.

In case anyone else is curious, there are three members of the 3,000 hit club who don't crack any of these categories: Dave Winfield (19th, with 3,110 hits); Al Kaline (27th, with 3,007 hits); and Roberto Clemente (28th, with 3,000 hits).

Maybe it's just me, but I think of A-Rod as a Yankee, definitely not a Mariner

I think it would be improved if the team listed would be the one for which the player accumulated the most of that category for. Under either circumstance, Rodriguez should be listed under the Yankees as his career there has now surpassed his career in Seattle.

Rickey Henderson not on the triples list????? With his speed and longevity that's shocking.

I think he would stop at first so Rickey could steal some bases.

It's amazing to see the shift in how the game is played- compare how many of the home run hitters are from recent memory, versus how many of the triples guys retired long before you were born.

Most of the people on the triples list are from the Dead Ball era of the early 20th century. For whatever reason (I'm guessing smaller outfields with lower fences), balls that would have been a triple back then become something else today. With less ground to cover, balls that don't clear the fence for a home run can either be tracked down in the air for an out (a related phenomenon could be the higher batting averages seen in those days) or returned to the infield more quickly to hold the runner to a double. Henderson had "only" 66 triples, but nearly 300 home runs (unimaginable during the Dead Ball era). Plus, getting a triple makes it much harder to steal a base :)

Todd Helton needs to be added to the doubles list. He passed Manny and, as of August 23, 2011, has 553 doubles (24th all-time, and likely to climb). Additionally, Bobby Abreu will be on this list by season's end, as he currently sits just 1 behind Manny at 546.

So now I see why Ruth passed the home run record so fast, he was a beast 1, and there were so many triples.

Listing the team as the one the player had the most games with (as opposed to the subjective "most well known for") might be a better option

Why are the Senators listed for Sam Rice, but the Orioles listed for Willie Keeler? Keeler should be listed for the Browns, especially if the standard is 'the team they're most known for.' Keeler never played for a team called the Orioles. Also, I suppose it's a tossup, but Frank Robinson is in the HOF as an Oriole, for whom he won his triple crown, one of his MVPs, and two world series (and played in two more). I think he's probably more known as being an Oriole even though he played slightly longer for the Reds.

Keeler, McGraw, Jennings and Kelley were all part of the 1890s Baltimore Orioles which traded titles with Boston during the decade. That Oriole team was later disbanded after the best players moved to Brooklyn with Hanlon as the owners (who owned both franchises) decided to stock the Brooklyn team and leave the Orioles with an empty nest.

I know Frank Robinson as a Red first, but it's really iffy. As for Cardinals players...I really need to brush up on my Cardinals' history. Geesh.

I think of Manny as an Indian, not as a Red Sox. As for Sheffield, he played on so many teams, it's hard to identify him with any team. Amazing such a good player had to play in so many places. Wasn't very well liked anywhere.

Reggie Jackson is best known for his "Mr. October" heroics, and for being the straw that stirs the drink, with the Yankees. His Hall of Fame plaque bears a Yankee cap.

@ baconstud01: First of all, love the handle. Second of all, surprisingly enough, Wee Willie actually amassed more hits with a 19th century National League franchise Baltimore Orioles. Not to be confused with the Baltimore Orioles of today (which came from StL Browns) or the 1901-1902 Baltimore Orioles (which became the NY Highlanders, and eventually the Yankees). Here's their page on B-R.com: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BLO/

@qtowndogg: In his final season at the age of 42, Cobb batted .323 through 95 games. He batted below .320 for the season just once in his career, and led his league in hitting 12 times. Consider also that he faced doctored baseballs now considered illegal. If you pitched around him, you risked walking him. His runs scored record was broken only recently by Rickey Henderson, and he stole home plate a record 35 times.

@qtowndogg: For his time, Cobb was a great home run hitter too. He won a homerun title, finished second three times, and finished in the top 10 in the AL 11 times.

@gustavpolo: He was great in many ways, but I'm not sure I would call him a great homerun hitter. Definitely better than the average of his time, but consider that his homerun title consisted of hitting only 9 home runs. And when the liveball era began, he hit 48 over the course of his final 8 seasons - 6 per year, which by comparison to his contemporaries wasn't a lot in the '20s

Sheffield spent over 5 seasons with the Marlins, won a WS and went to like 3 or 4 all star games with them. The only team he had nearly as much success with was with Dodgers and he was only there for like 3 years...so yeah, I would say he is most known as a Marlin.

Even though I think of Reggie as an Athletic, it might be best (for consistency) to list the HOFers with the teams on their plaques. And Sheffield I might put as a Brave before any other team, though he did win a World Series with the Marlins. The only other affiliation I questioned was Keeler, because when I looked at the teams, I then started thinking of eras, and the Orioles as we know them only began in the '50s. Yankees would be better for Keeler. He played the most games with them. Great quiz!
