Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is also called Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - otherwise fab quiz.

shrek and spirited away did not come out the same year because they both won the academy award for best animated feature

@smacmeister, Spirited Away came out in Japan in '01, but its USA release was in '02. The USA release determines the Oscar year.

See, this just blows my mind. A bunch of these seem so old (e.g. top-left, top-right) and some seem much newer (e.g. the French one, the New Zealand one).

Tragically, because of this quiz Pearl Harbour has no longer been purged from my mind. I was getting along so well without needing to remember its existence...

Is this a Sporcle movie quiz with actual international choices? A first perhaps?

Shrek, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Oceans Eleven.....2001 was the kick-off year for some seriously profitable franchises.

I always get a little bit annoyed seeing 'Sorcerer's Stone' - the name was amended for American audiences, and JK Rowling's original title is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Great quiz, but please allow for 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' aswell, as that's what it was called in most countries. I had no idea some places (USA, India, Pakistan & Sri Lanka) called it the Sorcerer's Stone

Why did they change Philosopher's stone? Doesn't make sense to me... Don't they have philosophy in the US. Also Pearl Harbor FTW!

They figured that American audiences would rather read a book with the word 'sorcerer' in the title rather than 'philosopher'. Which is dumb because then the book makes no sense because Nicolas Flammels stone was the Philosopher's Stone (and this is a pre-exisiting story, JK didn't make that up). But whatever, that's what America decided. They changed all instances of 'mum' to 'mom' as well. Guess American kids couldn't figure that one out.

Would be good to accept "Philospher's Stone", just to make sure the quiz works for people in those countries where the title was not changed. Don't know why the comments which mention this keep getting voted down.

It's tragic that so few people got Spirited Away. Why are Miyazaki films so unknown on Sporcle?

@h33 The comments are probably getting voted down because of the WAY they were phrased. Also it doesn't look like thomchak's got voted down.

Geez, some people are getting really butthurt about the Harry Potter name change. It's not like any of us personally changed it, no need to get nasty about it. Nice quiz, reminded me of some great films I haven't seen in a while.
