| Couple of thoughts:
While not the explicit ranking criteria, a good way to see who matches up is to compare the collective WAR of the players in any given infield. The 9 infields listed range from 15.9 (78 Dodgers) to 30.2 (13 Athletics).
Teams suggested:
'85 Royals: 9.4; '09 Phillies: 15.3 (also, Pedro Feliz was the 3rd baseman that year, not Polanco); '82 Cardinals: 15.7; '85 Cardinals 16.4; '99 Indians 19.6.
I note that no player in the rankings had a individual WAR under 2, except Evers at 1.9). Pendleton was 1.3 in '85, which probably caused that team to just miss. Fryman was only 0.5 WAR in '99.
'27 Yankees had a very good RIGHT side of the infield but the shortstop and third baseman were the two weakest hitters on that team. The infield was 20 WAR collectively, but 17.8 of that was Gehrig and Lazzeri. |
