Aren't Palau and Micronesia now sovereign states?

Thanks for the input. Fixed Arizona's spelling. Sorry, I know the right way to spell it, my fingers just like to do what ever they want to when I am typing and I forgot to spell check. :P And I have taken Palau and Micronesia off, because they are indeed sovereign states. I was just going by the postal service web site. For some reason they had them grouped in with the territories

Marshall Islands are independent as well. Became sovereign state in 1986.

Good quiz. I almost feel like you should add in Canadian provinces/territories, just to make it a little trickier.

I feel like "Northern Marianas" should be accepted for "Northern Mariana Islands". That's the only one I missed, other than that it's a good quiz.

This is a great idea but unless you're an American with high typing speed I don't see how it can be done! When I saw WA (even though I'm from the UK) my first thought was Western Australia :-)

Why is there a P in the abbreviation for the Northern Mariana Islands?
cuendillar

@BossMonster: Possibly just the principle of exclusion. It has the MP code internationally too, so P and B were the only second letters not used by either a country or US state.

@BossMonster: I think MP stands for Mariana Protectorate. Probably the word "protectorate" is somehow outdated today, but think that the postal abbreviations originated together with ZIP codes, in 1963 if I remember well.

In 3 minutes? Don't be ridiculous. I would have enjoyed having a go at this given a reasonable amount of time. Once again, Sporcle - please make time limits optional.

the abbreviation "MP" stands for Marianas Protectorate. The postal code was given when the Northern Mariana Islands were a UN trust territory under the trusteeship of the United States.

I missed MP, and several others because I'm not Superman and can't type that fast. I only got 28 out of 56 but I'm gonna try again and see if my typing skills get better.

OK, now I'm giving up. I got 53 out of 56. That's 94.6% with 16 plays. I skipped Northern Mariana Islands and District of Columbia, and then Ohio was the last one that I couldn't get to. No way I can type any faster than that.

YES!! YES!! YES!! I finally did it! 34 plays and I finally got all 56 and I even had 5 seconds left on the clock! No idea how, but I'll take it. I think my brain finally figured out that AS was American Samoa instead of Alaska and VI was Virgin Islands instead of Virginia. You don't have time to go back and fix a spelling error or a wrong answer.

I got hooked on this game and couldn't stop playing game after game after game. I figured out something that might help others get a better time. The main thing is try not to watch the clock. It takes a second here and there off your time by doing that, and it always made me nervous and I started making mistakes. You don't have time for mistakes. I have to stop playing now because my nerves are shot from playing this so much. 58 plays and I got a time of 2 minutes and 30 seconds. I got all of them and still had 30 seconds left on the clock. Don't look at the clock or what's coming up next while you're playing. Just type like a maniac and see what your time is after it's done.
