Oh my God! They're turkeys! Oh no! Oh, they're crashing to the earth right in front of our eyes! One just went through the windshield of a parked car! This is terrible! Everyone's running around pushing each other. Oh my goodness! Oh, the humanity! People are running about. The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement!

(1) "As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly." (2) Dr. Fever: "OK, Travis. Just hide me. I'll play anything. I'll play the Carpenters. I'll play Barry Manilow. Just don't let the phone cops get me!"

This show was a bit before my time but would come on syndication after cartoons sometimes. I don't know if I ever knew the show that well, but this theme song is forever stuck in my head. I got it all in less than a minute and a half.

Loved the continuing bit with Les Nesman's 'travelling' bandaid. You never knew where that thing was going to be next!

I've always thought this song owed a large debt to Harry Chapin's song W.O.L.D.
Same theme of a deejay talking to an old love about going station to station and trying to reconnect. I suspect they originally wanted Chapin's song and he turned them down so they wrote the closest song they could.
Of course, as with nearly every Harry Chapin compostion, if they played the whole song, there'd only be about 3 minutes left for the rest of the show.

Love it! Surprised more WKRP quizzes aren't on Sporcle, great show. See if you can remember the text for Johnny's on-air format change http://www.sporcle.com/games/SwedishChef/wkrp-on-air-format-change

@jon88: "Whatever" is a word, but has a different meaning; "what ever" is the appropriate usage here.

I'm not at all sure about this quiz. Getting a low score I can live with, but being reminded that I can never ever see it again because available tapes/DVD's aren't compatible with European equipment is not a nice thing at all. . . I suppose the laugh I got remembering the turkey episode makes it all worthwhile, though.

Wow. I knew all of the words. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I can barely remember things that happened yesterday; I need to clean out my brain and get rid of some of this useless trivia.

@wistfulabacus, is it on hulu.com? @barnztormre, I bet typical egghead Sporclers (I'll include myself) would agree--brains over glamor. Like Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island. Not that anybody there was exactly smart.... What, turkey's can't fly???

@Bobman1: Hulu.com is as far as I can tell only available in the States. In Canada we can't even view NBC Promos on the site, let alone episodes of old shows. So I can't see it being available in Europe.

Rockgolf, good info on the Chapin connection. I never knew about that, and as i was reading the lyrics i thought, 'this is kind of a sad wistful song for a tv theme.'

Here's how you know it's a great theme song: I haven't watched an episode of this show in over two decades, and I still remember every word.

I love that themesong! Besides the obvious Turkeys Away episode, you know what other one is just great? When they have a tornado. They use Les's disaster plan...only it's for a communist attack, and there's a really sweet scene with Carlson on the air.

Most depressing sitcom ever, and absolutely one of my favorites. Remember the episode where Herb was chosen to have a "reality show" TV crew visit his house for a day? The crew surprised the Tarleks by showing up a day early as a "gotcha," before they could clean up or compose themselves, and they captured how sad and insecure Herb's life really was. It was genius.

@ Bobman1: On the remote chance that you might come back here, thanks for your suggestion. Lightning--not just an American thing, thunderstorms--has knocked out sound on computer, but have made a note of the site for future.

The versions on Hulu are the same as the ones on the DVD, and unfortunately they were unable to secure the rights to all the music they used on the show originally. They've replaced the "real" songs with generic rock pablum, and I was surprised how much it loses as a result. Still worth watching, for sure, but it's not the same.

Sitting here singing the song as I type! Sad to hear they couldn't get the rights to the songs. The rights-holders should realize that people hearing the music on the show are more likely to say "Hey! I like that song!" and go out and buy it!
