This one is before my time, but I tried to find recognizable names or pictures with a bit of a clue. Please try a different decade if these faces are not so familiar to you. You can choose from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, or 2000s. If you liked this, watch for TIME images from the 1940s soon. Here's a scary thought...TIME started in 1923.

Can't wait for the 20's, 30's and 40's versions!
Oct 25th, 2010 at 04:15 GMT
As always Hejman, thanks for your awesome support.
Oct 25th, 2010 at 06:42 GMT
Terrific, though it certainly does get harder as we go back into the bygone era before Time could afford cameras.

I thought for sure the first one in row 5 was Hitchcock. Even the scissors made me think of 'Dial M for Murder'.
Oct 25th, 2010 at 13:43 GMT
Christian Dior really looks like Hitchcock.
Oct 25th, 2010 at 14:05 GMT
I thought it was Hitchcock too, and I'm embarrassed to say Missed the first picture too.
Oct 25th, 2010 at 14:17 GMT
Fantastic! A little before my time, but only two (in sports) I never heard of. Of course, I missed more than those two, but still lots of fun! Good job!

I could've sworn that had to be Yogi Berra with the backwards hat and catcher's mitt. Did Time intentionally lighten the color of Roy Campanella's skin?
Oct 25th, 2010 at 17:22 GMT
Got Ed Sullivan because I typed Sullivan (Anne) for the last one -- then I tried the actress instead of the role; have to say I never heard of John Lattner
Oct 25th, 2010 at 18:28 GMT
Surprised not to see Elvis.
Oct 26th, 2010 at 01:20 GMT
There are few things worse than being limited to what happened only while you've been alive, to my mind, especially when you live in times like these, so I'm with Hejman, looking forward to the other quizzes, too. I love the fact that Time used drawings and paintings instead of photos, another lost art, no pun intended. But you should have never put the golfer next to the pic of Lucy, I kept thinking it was Jimmy Demerit, and couldn't get it out of my head. Now I have to try the Hop, Skip and a Jump Shot! :)

@AtoneMENT - That's a "mashie" since you didn't say "May I?" ;}
Oct 26th, 2010 at 02:32 GMT
@GeorgiaPeach - I'm surprised, but Elvis was never on the cover of TIME. Thanks to everyone for playing and all the comments.

As my wife is a huge fan of Lucille Ball, I can say I've seen that jimmy demerit episode a few times too many!!
Oct 26th, 2010 at 16:42 GMT
Five globes, natch. FYI: if you look closely enough, under the portrait of Jack Paar, you can make out the words "JACK PAAR."

@googlebird: I would like to create a quiz with pictures. How did you do it?
Oct 26th, 2010 at 22:14 GMT
Great for us older Sporclers to have the 50s finally show up - no Pokeman, Kyrgyzstan... Great quiz, thanks so much!
Oct 27th, 2010 at 02:39 GMT
that was so fun to guess. i cant believe i got gina lollobrigida. i tried jean simmons, then was like ah, what the heck gina lollobrigida. i think it was the grapes. i also tried hitchcock 4 or 5 times, and when i gave up i was like "ok, who's the guy who looks like hitchcock?...oh, christian dior, well how bout that."

Felix, Campanella was light skinned his father was Italian his mother African-American.
Nov 3rd, 2010 at 04:42 GMT
I was so sure that the bottom left corner was Alfred Hitchcock
Nov 4th, 2010 at 03:22 GMT
Rather flattering picture of Ed Sullivan...
Nov 4th, 2010 at 03:40 GMT
I got Billy Graham guessing on Godfrey's picture. Didn't get Mays because I was trying to think of Yankees. Strangely, I thought Jack Paar was Johnny Carson.
Nov 7th, 2010 at 20:58 GMT
I thought I was getting credit for Annie Sullivan (the role being played by Anne Bancroft) when I was really getting credit for Ed, who I didn't recognize.

Awesome quiz! I'm not sure I've ever seen Queen Elizabeth II without gray hair!

Once again I miss this pope by spelling his name like the adjective.
Jan 28th, 2012 at 04:39 GMT
Gah! One day I will remember it's 'M
Jan 28th, 2012 at 05:11 GMT
If I live to be a thousand, I will never still spell the tonight show host the way Mr. Incredible spells his name. Never, never, never remember. Par for the course, I guess....

I thought to myself, this one guy looks like Salvador Dali as a businessman. Turns out it's Walt Disney, and the analogy works! Great quiz idea. I forced myself to take it and be humbled. Ideally I'd go read about the unfamiliar names on Wikipedia... uh-huh.
Jan 28th, 2012 at 05:57 GMT
I guessed Anna Magnani and even Sophia Loren (even though I knew it was wrong), and completely forgot about the third very famous Italian actress. As an Italian, I am ashamed. :( And I agree with cdclark...it DOES look like Hitchcock.
Jan 28th, 2012 at 06:44 GMT
I thought that I had studied that decade, and here I find several names that I never knew, and will have to go look up.
Jan 28th, 2012 at 07:34 GMT
I admit my first shot for the bottom corner was the actress in the back (no spoiler!) and although I immediately recognized that wasn't the primary face, her face is famous, and it is on the cover... Maybe a bonus?
Jan 28th, 2012 at 07:35 GMT
Also, I'd forgotten how much the young evangelist preacher looked like a Kennedy cousin.
Jan 28th, 2012 at 08:57 GMT
At first, I thought Walt Disney was George Orwell...
Jan 28th, 2012 at 11:36 GMT
Instinct really counts in a quiz like this. I knew half the bottom row, and got none of them.
Jan 28th, 2012 at 11:51 GMT
In my opinion, the best TIME covers were when they were paintings like these, not photos.
Jan 28th, 2012 at 13:01 GMT
Just the facts ma'am.
Jan 28th, 2012 at 14:27 GMT
I bet most of the Sugar Ray Robinson is people guessing Jackie Robinson for Willie Mays.
Jan 28th, 2012 at 14:33 GMT
The background can be just as important as the portraits themselves.
