Love the idea behind this one. Netherlands is listed twice under England, but only shows up once when you type it in. And perhaps consider adding "itself" as a bonus answer under USA...I tried it thinking of the Civil War. Actually that probably applies to England as well...Cromwell and all.

Yes england had 2 civil wars I believe. Left them out because it was going to be redundant anyway when you typed in england for USA and USA for england

For some reason Germany was accepted under USA but not England... probably a glitch with Sporcle and not an issue with your quiz though.

I'm not particularly saying both countries are warmongering nations. BUT I'm pretty sure there's generals from both sides of the Atlantic wondering how on Earth they missed all the other competing nations. PS Great idea for a game.

Surely if nations who are part of a sovereign country count as part of the country, then England has been at war with the UK, having been at war with all 3 other home nations in some point. Puerto Rico too was invaded by the US so shouldn't US count for US?

@Peanut, I did not include those for redundancy reasons, but will do so now since you are the second person to request that.

South Africa for England? After all they have thought two sections of what is now known as South Africa - The Boers and the Zulus. Maybe Serbia as a bonus for both countries due to the Peace enforcement policies during the Yugoslav break up.

North Korea definitely for the UK. The Korean war was fought between the UN and North Korea/China. Whilst South Korea and the US had by far the most troops, the UK had 63,000 troops.

England has definitely been at war with Denmark - there were two famous battles of Copenhagen during the Napoleonic Wars (1801 and 1807), and the latter was followed by a period of formal war, iirc. There's also an arguable case that the US and UK were at war with Slovakia during WWII, since Slovakia was an Axis satellite state. England also was arguably at war with Portugal several times in the late 16th/early 17th century during Portugal's personal union with Spain. I'm also puzzled by England's supposed war with Switzerland. When did that happen?

Oh, there's also the U.S. "quasi-war" with France (1798-1800), which was basically a de facto naval war. Maybe a bonus?

Algeria might be worth including due to the Barbary Wars with the USA.

@johnlk: The War of the 5th Coalition involved Great Britain, Austria, Hungary vs Holland, Switzerland, Italy, Bavaria and France in 1809. I have added a link for where I got info on British wars, it is Wikipedia (sorry) but it is the only comprehensive list I found. You are right about Denmark, I will add it and Portugal sorry

@hiddenpalace: The algerians never participated in the war, though, which is why I didn't include it. I will add as a bonus

godpaul - Switzerland never actually fought England in that war; I'm not sure if there was a formal declaration of war, though. Switzerland was a French satellite, so it's certainly possible it declared war on the UK at some point in the Napoleonic Wars. BTW, you say current non-countries count for the nation they were part of, but what about current countries that were once-non-countries? Slovakia and Slovenia were part of Austria-Hungary during World War I, for example.

Very, very clever idea for a quiz, godpaul25, and a wonderful job of responding to the issues raised. My only note is not with the game itself, but with the heading. Since you say "the countries the USA and England..." doesn't that make it a "they" therefore make the next word "have" instead of "has"? Oh, Lynne Truss would be happy with me for that comment. (http://www.lynnetruss.com/) And thanks for including the non-war with France on the USA side. John Adams would be happy you listed it.

@Hejman, thank you. I originally was making this quiz just for the U.S., but found it a little short, so added England, hence me forgetting to change the heading. Sorry will fix

@godpaul - Thanks for adding that the two countries have both been at war with another area that is now under their control, but surely England shouldn't be listed as at war with England, but as with the UK?

civil wars in England is why it's listed, same with U.S. (not war with puerto rico).
