| Actually, it would make sense for DC to stay, but not for the reasons people are discussing. There actually is no official "Washington, DC" - the District of Columbia was formerly made up of three separate cities (one of which was called Washington), which were fused together by Congress in the late 19th century into one entity known as the District of Columbia. So, the city is still known as Washington, D.C. colloquially, but technically the city is called "District of Columbia." (see this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_of_Columbia_Organic_Act_of_1871)
Of course, a good argument could be made that the technical name doesn't matter and since it's almost exclusively known as Washington, it should be removed from this. I'd even sort of agree - just wanted to share some interesting history! |
