Can you name the three countries whose names contain each three-letter pattern?
created by
gnatural
Enter a country in the box below
Correctly named countries will show up below
Answers do not have to be guessed in order
Each set of three letters appears, in order, in the names of exactly three countries, and does not span spaces. E.g., NIS can legally be found in TuNISia and TurkmeNIStan but not SolomoN ISlands.

Great quiz. I couldnt stop my brain from thinking capitals sometimes though. Tashkent! Bangui! Banjul! Manama! Dodoma! Bandar Seri Begawan (for 2 of them)! Wonder if a capital one is possible like this.

@puckett86: thanks! I had a couple other groups that ended up causing exactly that problem. @y2jdilemma: I have the same problem every time I test the quiz! @jelle: done.

Great! I think it needs a bit less time though; it's possible to complete the quiz by naming every country in the world

Keep in mind I'm under the 80th percentile....all I did was name as many countries as I could...and I went through a bunch in the time allotted. The quiz is cool looking, but just another "name as many countries as you can" quiz.

I do get frustrated with all these quizzes written by people who are not residents of the United Kingdom, who seem to believe that England, Scotland and Wales are not considered to be countries in their own right. As an English person I can assure you that they are considered to be countries, are listed in the Encyclopaedia Britannica as countries, have their own capitals and languages, and nobody living here would suggest otherwise, in fact you would be either laughed at or insulted if you tried. By that token, WALES should be accepted in this quiz.

@furrypolka I am from the UK and England, Scotland Wales and NI are not officially their own countries. On Sporcle, just like the rest of the world, they are not considered to be their own countries. It is similar to say that New England is its own country or the Northern Territories of Canada as its own country They're not. And the fact that you are arguing with the rest of society is wrong. Nobody on Sporcle would suggest they were individual countries, in fact you would be either laughed at or insulted if you tried. By that token, Wales shouldn't be accepted.

This quiz is hard as hell. I like it. @furrypolka: "countries" that are governed under one kingdom, i.e. not politically independent, are not considered sovereign nations, sorry. See also: Faroe Islands, Greenland, Aruba, Curacao, Sint Maarten, the Cook Islands, Niue, Navajo Nation, Cherokee Nation, and in total 562 federally-recognized tribes in the United States alone.

Surprising how many people try to point out an error in the quiz but it was them who was making the error. You'd think people would double check before posting it.

...kicking myself for looking at "IRA" and thinking "IRA... hmm I know some country starts with that... OH Ireland.. no, never mind" and then not getting any in that category. Iraq and Iran, you have snuck by me again. Also, my computer is underlining snuck? Isn't that what they teach us in elementary school is the past tense of sneak? What is it then, sneaked?

@Furrypolka: All those "countries" are governed by the Unitary government seated in London. Since they are not autonomous political entities, they are therefore part of the greater UK. Think of Wales, Scotland, England, and NI as "states" similar to that of the US. Each state in the US has its own capital and, in some regions, distinct languages. Yet, we do not consider the various states in the US to be individual nations, but rather part of the greater US.

@dudeman612 Please don't ever tell someone to think of England, Wales, Scotland and NI as similar US states again. I know it illustrates your point well and you are correct but still, they are not like states. They are countries, within a Kingdom. After a few quizzes on sporcle you soon realise that they use the "UK" for answers and correctly so, but I disagree with the way people have a massive go at people when they make that mistake for the first time!

Could not get OREgon and ColorADO out of my head the whole time. I wonder if you could do one of these for states? Also, yes you CAN just sit there and type in every country, but it's a lot more fun if you try and think of them instead. A lot of ones popped into my head but I still missed them because I didn't notice the letter combo in there.

@RJMurphy: "And the fact that you are arguing with the rest of society is wrong." What the ****! Since when has it been wrong to voice a legitimate opinion!! I accept that the UK is the correct way to refer to it on Sporcle and in many other places and I don't have a problem with it. I do have a problem with your jaded ideas of "right" and "wrong"!

Well I was certainly no Poli-Sci major in college. In fact my knowledge of how the world works is pretty sad. So I have a few sincerely dumb questions to ask. If the 50 United States each have their own local government but yield to the Federal US government when it comes to certain matters, and England et al are similar in that respect to the UK government, what is at the heart of the difference? Why do New Yorkers live in a state that is part of a country, whereas Englishmen live in a country that is part of a Kingdom? Also, at what point do certain European countries give up the right to consider themselves countries if they yield enough decision making power to an umbrella organization like the European Union? Can someone enlighten a math/science guy with a little info about how the world is organized? Thanx-a-bunch.

@everyone arguing about England, Wales, etc.: It’s not a question of “are they countries or not”. “Country” has different meanings in different contexts. In the historical, cultural, ceremonial sense, they’re individual countries. In the sense of “sovereign nation”, which is what this quiz uses (and what’s meant in most international contexts), they’re not. There’s no contradiction: they’re countries in some senses, yup, but not the sense that’s appropriate here.

@mikeo924: No longer the name, but that does bring to attention the PeopLE'S Republic of China, which is often referred to by its full name to disambiguate it from the Republic of China (Taiwan).

LES should be removed. Timor Leste is known as East Timor. If you are going to to go by official names, then you would also need to inclued Peoples Republic of China. That would than make it more than three answers.

I'd like to see the clues in a column on the left, and have the answers appear to their right, so all the clues can be seen at once and my eyes don't have to jump all over the page.

@NY_MOB: That's a great question. The easiest rule of thumb is whether or not the entity in question is among the 192 countries recognized by the UN. It would include Vatican City but exclude the Navajo nation, Wales or Massachusetts. There are always problems (best example is Taiwan), but that is a disputed country, which is a different issue, slightly. Hope that helps.
