I finally got them all right on a quiz! Not to get political, but there are no Muslim nations and only current or former communist nation (China) on the list.

Good quiz, but I think the time given was a bit long considering there were only 15 answers (although I didn't get all 15!). Therefore, I'd suggest either adding more answers or reducing the time to 3/4 minutes.

I actually think that this would be quite interesting if it was done per capita

Israel and Switzerland must be high on the per capita list.

I'm surprised not to see Russia, what with the millions of rubles poured into RnD during the Cold War.

are you sure about these numbers? i've in my possession a patent no 204426 from Czechoslovakia. I'd hope there are 204425 before it.

@moominpaul: is that patent even legal anymore? It's from a country that no longer exists...

This is only for the year 2005. Historically I'd guess the placings would look a lot different.

I'm guessing a lot of these patents are for small parts or advancements in technologies such as mobile phones. That would explain Finland being so high (Nokia). I seem to remember companies like Nokia and Apple file for hundreds and thousands of patents every year, leading to lawsuits and counter lawsuits when they say the other is using their technology.

Steesh is correct- think of countries with tons of companies, such as Germand car manufacturing, Finnish and Korean phones, but i dont quite see how canada or australia have more than, say, Brazil or India
