I can't believe how many people didn't know Joe McCarthy and Miller Huggins, who were way more successful than Joe Torre.

Starting the quiz in 1913 when they changed their name to the Yankees is kind of a weird place to start. The franchise had been in New York since 1903 and the majors since 1901. You're leaving out managers like Clark Griffith, Hal Chase and John McGraw.

I still find it odd that baseball's most storied franchise has had two managers who went by "Bucky."

I had to make sure I didn't have to pay anything first before I started a quiz about the Yankees.

Highlanders and 'Orioles' managers added. Please return to your regularly scheduled Yankee bashing or backing.

How is it possible that 82.7% of people got Martin in 1983 and only 78.9% got Billy Martin in 1979?

@moegoldberg: I was just looking at that! It's weird, I didn't get Martin, when you typed it did they all show up? @Luke: I'm 15. I didn't know any of these, they're all way before my time. @Bryant: You're probably a Boston fan... look who's in first place now!

No Don Zimmer? He managed a handful of games one year when Torre was treated for prostate cancer. Yeah he was a bench coach at the time, but he was "manager" while joe recuperated. I mean you have Dick Howser in '78 and his 1-0 record.

Yeah, as painful as it is, Steinbrenner's had to let a few people go over the years. Yogi Berra, Lou Pinella, Bucky Dent, Billy Martin, Dallas Green, Dick Houser, Bill Virdon, Billy Martin, Scott Marrow, Billy Martin, Bob Lemmon, Billy Martin, Gene Michael, Buck Showalter, Joe Girar- uh, you didn't hear that from me!

Better question: How does Billy Martin have his number retired and Joe McCarthy not? The man is first all time in wins. How does that make sense

@ Joker: Joe McCarthy never wore a number as Yankees manager. Even though players, managers, and coaches were wearing numbers at the time, he never did. (Saw that on Wikipedia once)

The Wikipedia link to Wild Bill Donovan needs to be to "Wild Bill Donovan (baseball)". The current one leads to the irrelevant but fascinating (and more significant outside baseball) organizer of the U.S. Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the chief antecedent of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Since the latter Donovan was an adventurous Wall Street lawyer, I had to wonder had he also managed the Pinstripers?

Zombifany, ties would result frequently in baseball when games were called on account of darkness. More recently they would occur occasionally when a game was called due to rain. MLB has passed a suspended game rule which eliminates most ties, but you'll see one occasionally when an official game is called but not crucial enough to resume later.

yy2jdilemma, Zimmer was never officially the manager. Although he did serve in that role while Torre was out, Torre was still the nominal manager. In contrast, Howser's one game in '78 occurred after Martin had "resigned" and before Lemon was hired. He was, in fact, the only manager of the team for that brief period. You may argue about whether it is appropriate for the Zimmer games to be included under Torre's record, but there is a difference between the two episodes.

Knew all the 80s guys thanks to the book Damned Yankees which is a hilarious depiction of Steinbrenner's incompetence during that era.
