	At least some Americans were able to counterattack at Pearl Harbor. The Japanese weren't able to do so against atomic bombs.

	@Brian...its not quite the same. Pearl Harbor was a naval base and Nagasaki and Hiroshima were factory cities filled with lots of civilians. Pearl Harbor death toll : about 2,500. Nagasaki death toll: 40,000 and Hiroshima: 70,000. Totally 110,000 to 2,500. Not quite the same...

	This quiz was bound to be controversial. You can't possibly include everything and maintain a workable quiz. Most of the main battles are here. That being said, I did expect to see the Battle of the Atlantic and perhaps the Battle of Anzio.

	"Battle of France" ought to be acceptable for May 1940 on the western front and "Overlord" ought to work for Battle of Normandy, I think. I'm surprised at the absence of Norway, of the Kasserine Pass, and of Falaise. There's also a general lack of the Eastern Front, but that's to be expected, I guess.

	While the atomic bombing of Japan was a massively significant event in both the war and history as a whole, I don't think they count as a battle. A battle is one bunch of people fighting another bunch of people, not a few planes flying in unopposed, dropping bombs unopposed and flying out again. And the Siege of Leningrad is a major omission. It lasted over two years and killed about a million civilians and half a million or more soldiers: one of the deadliest battles in history. Out of every forty or so people who died in WWII, one was in Leningrad.

	This is a pretty poor list I think. Some of the battles included are relatively obscure (Milne Bay, Rostov, Makin, River Plate) and some very significant ones are absent (Kharkov, Anzio, Atlantic etc.).

	I accept what Booger says about not being able to include everything, but even so, there are some shocking ommisions. 2 battles for Smolensk 1941 and 1943 were both massive and horrendously costly engagements. Kiev 1941 saw the Soviets losing over 600,000 men. Operation Bagration 1944, saw more Germams killed or captured in 12 days than in the 5 months at Stalingrad. The 1943 offensive on the lower Dnieper. Lvov-Sandomierz offensive. Warsaw Uprising 1944, Jassy–Kishinev offensive 1944, The battle for Budapest 1945, all of these battles were huge compared with many, probably most, in the list. All in all, a nice try, but even so it's a meagre and incomplete list at best. Also Berlin was an Eastern Front Operation not Western. :(

	@ zxb Yes! I was so confused when I saw Berlin counted in the Western theater. The numbers involved in the Battle of Berlin are simply staggering, exponentially larger than most comparable urban battles. I think the tendency for Americans at least, perhaps westerners in general, is to overestimate the impact of the Americans during the war. Stalingrad, Leningrad and Kursk were such monumentally enormous battles, and we forget they all occurred before the Americans were most the way through Italy. Of course you have the two-front impact and of course the Germans exercised exhausting aerial campaigns in the west before Normandy, not saying the U.S wasn't a big part of success in WWII. But I think it's fair to say that the Soviets bore the biggest responsibility in the defeat of Nazi Germany, as opposed to believing that the Nazi's had the world by the throat until the U.S landed in Normandy, as I think some people tend to believe

	Its a nice start but I agree on Battle for France, Tarawa, Market Garden for Arnhem, also Cobra for Brittany, Kasserine Pass, Operation Bagration, Kiev, Warsaw. Also should have Husky (Sicily), Salerno, and Anzio. What is Hundred Regiments Offensive? Could also add Savo, Solomons offensive, Marianas, Santa Cruz.

	it's unlike that every offensive/battle/military event in WW2 could be represented in this quiz, but it covered most of the main ones and fronts. forgot a few 'obvious' ones as i didn't quite realise they were classified as battles.

	obviously such a huge war is tough to boil down to a single quiz, but I think it could certainly use the Winter War in Finland, and the Battle of Corregidor, which knocked the US out of the Philippines until 1945. Maybe can be included in WWII II.

	I agree that the atomic bombings though extremely significant were not really 'battles'. The Soviet Manchurian Campaign in August 1945 should be included. Its scale dwarfs many on the the current list and it has had a lasting strategic impact, viz Korean War, North Korean stand off, etc. Finally, how about Operation Overlord as an alternative for Normandy.

	I thoght that I was reasonably knowledgeable about WW2,but I have never heard of the Battle of Makin and I think that it was pretty much unimportant in the overall scheme of things. Milne Bay was a minor victory for the allies but if it had been a defeat it still wouldn't have had much adverse affect on the final outcome. I've never heard about Rostov, or the Hundred Regiments camapign,if you wanted to include the River Plate action then perhaps you should include Savo and some other major naval battles of the Pacific, also can't recall Gazala. As mentioned by other contributors Corregidor, Overord, Market Garden, the Soviets in Manchuria, Imphal in Burma, Buna-Gona in New Guinea, Crete, the British in Greece fiasco, the 1944 land war in the Philippines, the Malta defence, certainly Anzio and the other major battles in Italy and of course the colossal battles on the Eastern Front should perhaps be included. The definition of battles becomes blurred a little - Torch is more of a campaign, as is Normandy and Brittany. Atom bombs on Japan is not a battle but the B29 firebombing of Japan was a battle.

	Perhaps there should be a quiz on WW2 operations. A few examples could include Overlord, Cobra, and Husky, as well as those already mentioned in this quiz and others less well-known. Also, I was surprised there was no mention of Kharkov, Husky (Sicily), Wake Island, or the Dieppe Raid. Still, this was an entertaining quiz!

	OK, I had to look it up and the Battle of Makin involved 6,500 American troops and 400 Japanese troops. While importsnt in the overall conduct of the war,it does seem to pale a bit in comparison to the other battles, no offense intended to the Americans who took it or the Japanese who died defending it. I really think this would be better broken up into battles by theatre.
