good quiz, 13/15. 4 minutes might be a little long though.

Not a bad game, but it's another one that's just "guess large countries". I got 13 in the first two minutes before giving up, and I'm straight edge. I mean, I knew 1, 2, and 4 would be there, but the rest were complete guesses.

No, I think 4 minutes is about right.

Other than USA, France, and Italy I pretty much guessed on everything and only missed one.

Got 14/15 and onlt a few were a surprise but since i pick my wine based on it having an interesting animal on the label i have covered most of these countries, except no 14, off to search out an animal label....

Sweet, I got them all. Pretty good for someone who doesn't drink.

Got them all except #14, which surprised me. Had no idea they produced that much wine.

I missed #14 as well. I drink and occassionally enjoy a glass of wine and don't know if I've ever seen a bottle from there.

Never drunk Hungarian wine, so forgot it. Surprised Britain is not on there, i thought we produce more than Hungary or Brazil.

A guessing game, but even a guessing game can be fun and informative. There are a couple of "name a big country" kind of answers, but that's life for you. (My International Relations prof liked to point out that--at least at that time--there were more Muslims in China than in Saudi Arabia.) Was awfully surprised to see Hungary; by that point I was just banging out European countries.

Hungary is quite well-known for producing Tokaj dessert wines, some of which are among the most expensive wines in the world. Britain produces very little wine, tohugh the amount and quality is increasing all the time. Many champagne producers are buying up land in Kent because global warming is expected to make the Champagne region too hot but nudge south-eastern England in the right direction for those grapes. I'm surprised that people haven't been surprised that New Zealand isn't on the list. According to 2004 figures I have, UK production is about 1.7Ml per year, New Zealand about 64.2Ml/year and Israel about 6Ml/year.

@JSChen: Good on you! I'd much rather see a 14yo who knows about wine than one who just thinks it's the cheapest way to get drunk in the park on a Saturday night.

@JSChen: So, is Chinese wine any good, then? It's one of the three on the list that I've not tried (the others being numbers 12 and 15).

14/15. Missed Hungary, where half of my family is from, but still glad to see a quiz I can do well on in the first try.

@Rachel: Some people go crazy for the South American wines. I personally watched several people flip out when my local wine shop got a hold of some Argentinian Malbecs. I think I have a Colombian wine on my rack right now.

I thought Canada produced a lot of ice wines. Maybe not so much in 2005. A more recent source would be nice.

Chaim, I don't think Israel is even in the top 25, let alone the top 15...although they do make some great wines. I got all 15 in 45 seconds. I guess that beverage management class paid off!

i got all 15, although i only got hungary after a minute-and-a-half of typing any country i could think of, and i still had 38 seconds left. i agree with the earlier comments that maybe there is a little too much time.

@Tony: The OIV's table (linked as the source) doesn't have Canada in the top 22 in 2005. I have a table for 2004 in a book and it gives Canada's production as 52.2Ml/year and they're not going to have increased that six-fold in four years. Also, literal ice wine (i.e., wine made from grapes that have been left on the vine so long that they've frozen, rather than just any sweet dessert wine) is unlikely to contribute a significant proportion of any country's output because it's very much an all-or-nothing affair: there's a good chance that the grapes will rot on the vines before the first freeze. Producing an ice wine is a big risk for a vineyard.

@magister: That's interesting because I'm not sure I've ever associated South America with wine, at least not the way I would with European countries. Although, I'm not a wine drinker either.

@Rachel: Chilean wine's fairly popular in the UK, FWIW. I've not seen much Argentine and what I have seen has been away from the cheaper end of the price spectrum. Not knowingly seen any Brazilian.

I missed #6 and spent the rest of the day hitting my head against the wall in shame. Chilean and Argentinan (sp?) wine is common here in Canada (well, in Quebec at least).
