Was really surprised the 'Q' wasn't 'Quito'. Then searched Wikipedia and realized how far off it is. Same with Addis Ababa, thought there were way more than 2.5 million there.

The Calcutta answer isn't really fair - India has changed the spelling, just like they did with Bombay - Mumbai. Calcutta doesn't exist anymore - it's Kolkata. If Sporcle is going to use the correct names in other geography quizzes, then it really needs to be consistent. Other than that, I like this quiz.

springmom, Calcutta is the English spelling of it so it makes sense. Mumbai is a totally different name than Bombay, not a spelling variation.

A good idea for a quiz but an awful source. The numbers are way, way out and Calcutta hasn't existed since 2001.

No, Calcutta WAS the English spelling of it until 2001. Now it is Kolkata.

@zalagreensbury - you're right, I went to US Census quick facts, and the 2008 estimate of the population for the state is 19.4 million, so this has got to be wrong. The whole state is so not in the metro area.

@zalagreensbury - it's listing the metro area for NYC, which would include parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, and parts of Long Island and areas in New York state north of the city. It's not listing the population of the state.

Oh, I didn't think about that...some metro areas do go outside of state lines, like Philadelphia.

@SporcleAdmin: Add Egypt to Cairo, and make Kolkata, India the K answer (with Calcutta as an alternate answer).

The New York metro area is larger than you think, and in fact includes areas that are not in NY state at all: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_metropolitan_area

Kolkata, Calcutta, it's like color or colour (as our British friends choose to spell it). I mean, is anyone really gonna care once they type in Calcutta and get it? I mean really it's just semantics!

Honestly, the whole renaming of Indian cities was silly in the first place. I have several Indian friends who say that practically everyone there still calls them by their old names (and same with Rangoon, to my understanding).

@zalagreensbury, as a commuter to NYC everyday, I know a number of people who come from New Jersey and even Connecticut (Danbury and Bridgeport specifically). I admit that it doesn't seem like they're part of the metro area, but they do play a large role for the city, so i don't know

Per the official census bureau's definition of the NYC CBSA, parts of NJ and CT are absolutely in the NYC metro area.

Weird, I couldn't think of ANY V cities, let alone big ones. Everytime I tried all I came up with was Vanuatu, which isn't even a city.

It's hard to know the exact population of a metro area since they don't have a set border like a city - which means it's hard to get an accurate source for all the metro areas in the world. I prefer quizzes that use metro population but can see how using city population is much easier and black and white.

Guangzhou has 6 million and urban area of 8.5, should be answer for "G". Vancouver has metro area of 2.1 million (vs. 1.1 for Valencia (according to E.U. data), and should be answer to "V".
