There are a few bonus answers to be had as well.

Hahaha Landon Donovan FTW!
Dec 10th, 2008 at 07:26 GMT
Why is Landon Donovan included as a bonus answer?
Dec 10th, 2008 at 10:52 GMT
For the same reason that (probably among others) Henry, Zidane and Beckham are: they're famous names that a lot of people will try typing in, so it's interesting to see where they stand. Although Donovan isn't particularly well-known outside the US, I suspect.

It wouldn't accept the Uruguayan player's name without the accent, which takes some time to figure out.
Dec 10th, 2008 at 11:47 GMT
More difficult than you would think. Some here only really starred in 1 World Cup so easy to miss. Great stuff nonetheless.
Dec 10th, 2008 at 13:41 GMT
This is the first quiz where the number of bonus answers I got (4) outnumbered the number of regular answers I got (2).
Dec 10th, 2008 at 14:02 GMT
Dennis Bergkamp my hero :D
Dec 10th, 2008 at 14:28 GMT
Yeah, I think Miguez without the accent should also be accepted there. I thought I knew that one but the refusal to accept Miguez had me trying Schiaffino and Varela.
Dec 10th, 2008 at 14:30 GMT
Ah, others noticed that Miguez cannot be accepted without the accent. Peculiar, indeed.
Dec 10th, 2008 at 19:44 GMT
uh leonidas? didnt remember him, except from 300 that is.

Brian McBride is another bonus answer
Dec 11th, 2008 at 00:18 GMT
I'm surprised Ronaldinho (or Moreira) isn't a bonus answer.
Jan 25th, 2009 at 14:10 GMT
Got 16 and couldn't spell Eusebio, Jairzinho, Rummenigge and Kocsis. Mind you, I completely forgot about Maradona.
Feb 11th, 2009 at 21:46 GMT
i got six bonus answers: Beckham, Bergkamp, Henry, Zidane, McBride and Donovan. Are there any more?? What about Suker, Kempes and Matthaus?
Mar 13th, 2009 at 02:18 GMT
got 14/27 got all the important ones though lol!
May 3rd, 2009 at 21:25 GMT
Can't believe that donkey Klose is up there with so many true greats. That excuse for a team that Saudi Arabia fielded in 2002 has a lot to answer for.
May 24th, 2009 at 14:11 GMT
12 of 27, about what i expected. 8 of the top 9 though, missed the Hungarian. No Lothar matthaus though? Couldve sworn he'd be up there.
May 27th, 2009 at 18:23 GMT
i got 6 bonus answers! ha! henry, bergkamp, donovan, mcbride, zidane and beckham. @Ahaha some people hav heard of lando donovan abroad bcoz it is getting a bit more press now (from beckham) and i understand that he is the national captain as well. am i right?
Jun 14th, 2009 at 01:19 GMT
sous_chef, Donovan and Carlos Bocanegra take turns with the captains armband. The national team manager can't seem to make up his mind.
Sep 7th, 2009 at 02:58 GMT
Got 19, sport stats like that are glued in my memory. I knew I was missing Klose, but couldn't remember his last name, as well as Ademir (I knew there are two pre-Pele Brazilians there). Forgot Vieri - surprised he has 9. Didn't try any bonus answer - none of the afformentioned names in previous comments (besides Kempes, who was leading goalscorer in 1978 with 6) seemed to be relevant. Similarly Croatian Suker was leading goalscorer in 1998 with 6, but I guess they only player one WC each. Even trying US strikers is absurd - do they have a WC scorer with 5 goals? Matthaus is the WC appearances leader with 25 but he was mainly a sweeper - how many goals did you expect him to score? Now read he had 6, I only remembered the 3 from his best campaign, Italy 1990.
Dec 9th, 2009 at 18:30 GMT
Voeller should really be accepted for Voller with umlaut. A lot of us don't have German keyboards.
Dec 9th, 2009 at 18:34 GMT
Archer - Suker was a part of Croatian squad in 2002 in Japan too, but didn't make an impact with only one appearance.
Dec 22nd, 2009 at 23:07 GMT
Archer, Matthaus only became a sweeper towards the end of his career, before that he was very much a centre midfielder. He actually scored 4 goals in 1990, and played in four other tournaments, 25 matches in all, so is not an unreasonable guess. Just for your interest his other goals were in 86 and 94.

I got thirteen actual answers and I got 6 bonus answers, Donovan, Beckham, Henry, Zidane, Bergkamp, and McBride
Mar 21st, 2010 at 17:47 GMT
I watched the man doing the draw for Europa League QF, and still forgot him... Uwe Seeler...
Jun 13th, 2010 at 10:58 GMT
Surprised Kempes isn't there - how many did he get altogether?
Jun 13th, 2010 at 21:23 GMT

last time i looked Ronaldo was from portugal, not brazil
Jun 16th, 2010 at 21:37 GMT
Not christiano ronaldo, ROnaldo from Brazil dumbass
Jun 17th, 2010 at 00:46 GMT
How come you not know who Ronaldo is? The best player from the last 20 years... I dont know how i forgot Batistuta, and really loved to see that Bergkamp is a bonus, that goal against argentina in 98 is the best ever!
Jun 20th, 2010 at 02:24 GMT
@tjvhammer - Kempes only scored in the 1978 finals, although he won the Golden Boot that year with 6 goals. @fatuch and yankeespurs101 - if you're only recently into football then it's quite possible you wouldn't have heard of the buck-toothed, stupid-haired yet brilliant Brazilian Ronaldo! No need to be nasty about it! And yes - this needs updating as Klose now has 11 goals - but his suspension for the last group game could cost him the chance to get any more if the Germans can't beat Ghana!
Jun 25th, 2010 at 19:26 GMT
ive got Ivanov as a bonus LOL!
Jun 30th, 2010 at 15:20 GMT
got 11.. happy with Kocsis, should have gotten either Baggio or Vieri... Got 4 bonusses as well, and I'm not the only one here, but why do we answer Bergkamp and Donovan when there's no American or Dutch guy in the hint column?
Jul 4th, 2010 at 22:47 GMT
Update Miroslav Klose to 14!
Jul 5th, 2010 at 16:27 GMT

Jul 5th, 2010 at 23:07 GMT

Ah looks like Klose missed his chance to beat Ronaldo. You think they will let him back for the Brazil World Cup if he has a couple of sparkling seasons at Bayern Munich?? He is only 32 right now you know.
