I don't like to start generational warfare, but I'm gonna say this as somebody who wasn't alive when this award started--artists aren't even trying to make good videos anymore.

It must be hard these days for MTV to pick from the 3 videos they show a week.

So that's why alot of these acts are popular. Everyone after the mid-90's sucked at music, but they apparently had good videos.

I love how Kanye West flips out every year when he gets snubbed. "This video cost a million dollars!"

Look at Money for Nothing. Primitive CGI. Still better than anything they crank out today.

@Golem: I personally don't think that video would be as good today if the CGI wasn't so primitive. Otherwise I'd probably find Gorillaz videos more entertaining.

@pancakes Don't think so unless you wish to stay up for MTV AM (well at least where i live it comes on) and plays either crappy rap music videos or BAD "wannabe" rock videos.

Anyone else smile when they saw where Britney Spears ended up? Even though she was the most recent she's third to last.

I did disturbingly well until the most recent three. Should have known Neil Young, but I forgot that song was by him so it didn't come to mind. The great thing about the VMAs is that most of these are really awesome music videos even if the song stinks.

Wished I'd have had a little more time. May have gotten a couple more. Oh well, I guess when you like a band you know all their songs and have a hard time guessing which one other people liked.

I think if anything it proves that 91-99 = best music ever. The 80's had it's charm for rock but the 90's had such a wide variety of different styles of music that was awesome. And now as for today the less said the better ella ella ay.

It's so, so sad that I got all of them and barely had to think about it- I have rarely been less proud of a 100%. I haven't watched the VMAs in at least five years (which is also the last time they chose a song that wasn't horrible)... I miss the days of when the M in MTV still stood for "Music".

Wow, Rihanna has officially jacked up the way I spell umbrella--you realize how many times I tried to type um-ber-ella-ella-ella *sigh* Oh, and yeah, the VMA's lost major respect for me once I found out they jipped 'Take On Me' for 'Money or Nothing'

Perhaps the reason the Neil Young track is so low is that MTV never played it until it won this award. As might be guessed by the title, it is a parody of how corporate agendas and sponsorships were taking over music. MTV was afraid it would offend both their advertisers and other big name acts.

OK, I'm never one to say "it should accept x". BUT if it accepted "Slim Shady" or "My Name Is" or "My Name Is ..." for "The Real Slim Shady", that would be nice. It's Sunday morning, for heck's sake. :) I could barely type well enough to get into the top 40% of all quiz takers.

I'm surprised at how low Missy and The Cars are... I'm pretty sure people should remember "Work It", as it is from less than ten years ago. The Cars, on the other hand, I can see being really low, though that video was awesome (I'm sure someone will say "Thriller" was robbed that year now...)

Guess it shows how old I am when I can only do the left hand column and not the right hand . . . or is it that music video quality has gone downhill.

Also, "Tonight, Tonight" is, in my opinion, the best music video all-time. It was original and innovative, meshed well with the lyrics, visually appealing, and was for a great song. Probably the best and, judging by how few people got it, definitely the most underrated ever.

I'm pretty amazed at the number of people who complain about MTV not showing videos. Why would they? No one wants to sit around and wait for videos they like to be played. You want to see the new Kanya West video? Go to his website. Or Youtube. Or Myspace. Or iTunes. If music videos were a valuable business plan, you'd think IMF or Fuse or MTV3 or Vh1 Hits or any other number of the music video stations would be doing a lot better. Why aren't artists putting out innovative videos? Why bother? Who's going to watch it more than once? I guess it turns out music videos as a popular artform WERE just a fad, so long as television reigned the supreme delivery device of entertainment. The Internet Killed the Video Star.

I beg to differ with some of the above comments. These days, artists are only in it for the videos. Granted, they may not even be great videos, but they focus more on a cool video than the music that goes with it. That's why hip hop junk remains popular despite its lack of talent.

I missed every video after 2001 and got all the videos before that. I'm guessing that's around the time when videos lost most of their appeal, power, and relevance.

@paulvc: "Tonight Tonight" is a very well-made adaptation of Le Voyage dans la lune, a movie from 1902. It's good, but I don't think that's exactly original or innovative.
