The answers to "Straight Outta Compton" and "Gold Digger" don't show up how they're supposed to (as in typing "Kanye West" doesn't work, but "Jamie Foxx" does, or only having to hit "NW" instead of "NWA").

the answer to gold digger is actually written wrong; it only says "Kanye West ft" and doesn't even say Jamie Foxx

And while we're at it, "2pac" should suffice; "Big Pun" should suffice; "Lil Jon" should suffice for "Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz"; "Grandmaster Flash" should suffice for "Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five".

You might want to accept "Funky 4 plus 1" for "Funky 4 + 1" and "A Tribe Called Quest" for "Tribe Called Quest" Also, this list is horrible. Shame on you VH1.

Grandmaster Flash should definitely work for Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Seriously---insane.

The music that the fathers of hip-hop created was pure genius. It is absolutely incredible how DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash began the global phenomenon from deep in the Bronx. The "hip-hop" produced today comes nowhere close to what it was back in the day.

I second for A Tribe Called Quest sufficing for Tribe Called Quest. brewcrew, I'm sure you mean mainstream hip-hop, The Roots are still rockin' it.

Yeah, should have specified. Some hip-hop today stays true to their roots (i.e. The Roots) but mainstream hip-hop just isn't the same.

Wow...VH1's credibility just sank about 1,000 points. Seriously, "Rapper's Delight" and "The Message" have no business being ranked in the same list as ANY rap song made in the last five years. Also, on some quizzes, you usually take one answer if it's more than one person...this one I could not remember Rob Base's partner for the life of me...

I think there needs to be a thicker line between rap and hip hop...Lil Jon talking about...'certain fluids' on walls is hip hop; 'fight the power' is rap. If this was just a straight forward hip hop list than no doubt, Notorious BIG needs to be up at number one.

First, this list is horrible. VH1 should be ashamed. Second, just "Foxy Brown" should be good enough. Third, this list is horrible. It's all over the board. And many of these songs aren't even the best by that particular artist, let alone the best in hip hop.

Too inconsistent on what it will take. Have to type out Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock, have to type out and the Treacherous Three (not even 3) for Spoonie Gee...but it takes Doug E Fresh by himself?

Why did VH1 limit almost all the artists to one appearance on the list? 2Pac definitely deserves multiple songs on a list like this.

They tried not to be sexist and put a lot of songs from female artists that shouldn't be there. I know it sounds sexist but there just aren't that many great songs from female rappers, especially in the last 10 years. Rappers like Roxanne Shante, L'Trimm, and Yo Yo shouldn't be there. And yes, this is a horrific list. Even the Source 100 was better than this.

@Freddie: Each artist has only one song in the list, Hard Knock life was (unfortunately) the bigger hit

@johnboy - LL Cool J has two - which makes you wonder why, when so many other artists probably have more than one of the (real) top 100.

To clarify, LL Cool J has two entries solely credited to him. I appreciate that Run DMC, Notorious BIG, 50 Cent, Li'l Kim & Jay-Z are all credited on more than one, and of course there's also those who double up under more than one name such as Dr Dre who was also part of NWA.

This is an atrocious list compiled here by VH1. The fact that Big L is missing from this list while acts like 50 Cent, Cypress Hill, and Busta Rhymes are is a disgrace to hip-hop.

Wow, I can't believe I failed to guess Tupac and Nas- even though I didn't recognize the songs I should have known they'd be on here. On the other hand, I got some obscure ones because I actually watched this special on VH1 and remembered some names. That said I have to agree that this list is nowhere close to representing the top 100 hip-hop songs. Of course, knowing VH1, you can't expect it to.

Must say this an atrocious list but I'm pretty happy with 45, considering I haven't heard of most of the other acts. Add The Coup and about 6 more Biggie songs and I'll be much happier. Nelly and 50 Cent really?
