| To Libreria: I know where you're coming from, but, technically, the War Dept was not renamed to the Defense Dept. The War Dept actually became the Dept of the Army. The Dept of Defense was a wholly new cabinet position created to combine all of the military services under one single civilian commander below the level of president. This became even more important when the Air Force was made independent of the Army as a separate service. That way, the President presumably only had to deal with one civilian military leader instead of two or three. It makes for easier planning and execution. |
