Just wondering, could Guantanamo Bay be considered a US possession? I know the US occupies Guantanamo Bay under a perpetual lease (which Cuba claims was procured by treaty illegally), so maybe it is not a possession in the truest sense.

and what is all that uninhabited territory for, exactly? nuclear testing?

Booger - It is no more a US possession than any other US military base or embassy. By international convention, foreign bases and embassies are considered US soil, but they are not US territories.

guantanamo like any other military base is illegal...Why do you think we are every where but no one is allowed here???? What the U.S does sometime is no less then an illegal invasion on a foreign land If we are not invited, asked to leave but stay and build a miltary compound that my friends is an act of invasion and strong arm

gopaladins - A number of them were claimed under the Guano Islands Act, which allowed US citizens to claim possession of islands with substantial guano deposits, as guano was, at the time, a valued fertilizer. Others were taken for defensive purposes - the MIdway Islands, for instance. Most we keep not because they're useful but because, well, why give them up.

As for Guantanamo Bay, I looked up the relevant treaty from 1903. It states in part: "the United States recognizes the continuance of the ultimate sovereignty of the Republic of Cuba over the above described areas of land and water" but allows the United States to "exercise complete jurisdiction and control over and within said areas" during the "period of the occupation." That's enough evidence for me that it is not a US possession.

Good quiz! I do wish we had a map to go with the blanks. The whole area of overseas territories, dependent areas, non-self-governing territories and so forth is a very fruitful one for future quizzes. For example, how about the UN list of non-self-governing territories? British overseas possessions? One of the coolest quizzes I could think of would be the world map from "countries of the world," only this time, naming the 60-odd territorial possessions in the world today (Wikipedia has a list).

Shouldn't Washington DC be somewhere here, even if it's a separate category? It's still US sovoreign territory that is not a state. And seeing all those island names reminds me - how about that Most Populous Oceania Cities quiz already?? The other four "most populous cities" quizzes feel like an incomplete set.

Doesn't D.C. count in some way? It's not a state. It's a dependent district or something , right?

chillicothe: Washington, DC is a federal district under the control of Congress. It is not a territory or a dependent.

The term commonwealth might be misleading - Massachusetts, Virginia, Kentucky, and I think Pennsylvania are all commonweaths technically.

I think that this was a good, thought-provoking and important quiz. Can't speak for anyone else, but Americans, we really ought to know these places, since we make claim to them. I did really poorly, and I obviously have a lot to learn.
