| @Booger: OK, let's run with your idea. The oldest show, Guiding Light, ran as a 15 minute show from 1952 to 1968, as a half hour show from 1968 to 1977, and thence as an hour-long show. Let's estimate 50 weeks of 5 weekday showings per year for 250 showings per year. That means 16 years of 0.25 hour showings, 9 years of 0.5 hour showings, and 32 years of 1 hour showings. Multiplying by the 250 showings per year, we get 4000 showings of 0.25 hours, 2250 showings of 0.5 hours, and 8000 showings of 1 hour, or about 10,000 hours total. Let's suppose that 1/3 of every show was commercials and we remove those. That leaves 6700 hours. Assuming that we force your heinous criminal to watch "Guiding Light" for ten hours a day (leaving time for sleep, eating, exercise, bathroom breaks, prayer, and chatting with his lawyer about this being a violation of his 8th Amendment rights against torture), he has got to watch for 670 days, which is about 22 months. I think his brain would have passed numb, zoomed by frostbitten, and headed into full-blown gangrene. |
