I've just realized that I know a bunch of national monuments, national historic sites, national preserves, and even a national seashore, but very few national parks. This is a great quiz, though! Maybe we could do one with some of the other places run by the national park services?

Parks that span multiple states should only be counted once. Why not say that Yellowstone is in Wyoming/Montana/Idaho or even just Wyoming, which is where most of the Park is? Likewise, the overwhelming majority of Death Valley NP is in California; Great Smoky Mountains NP is split evenly between TN and NC.

I'm not sure I understand the criteria exactly. Is it only natural parks? The reason I ask is Harper's Ferry is a National Park, the only one in WV. I believe most civil war battlefields are National Parks as well.

@wvu: i think the battlefields you're referring to are considered 'national historic sites'. i second the idea for a quiz on those as well.

@wvu: Harpers Ferry is a National *Historical* Park, not a National Park.

I always find it strange that Grand Teton is generally considered the greatest of the nationals parks and so few people know about it.

Isn't Disneyland a national park? I kid, I kid. But I did try Mt. Ranier and didn't get it. I also put in Kilauea and Mauna Loa but didn't get those for "Hawaii Volcanoes."

Technically, Independence Hall is the only indoor National Park. It should be on here.

StuD 89 is technically wrong. Independence Hall is part of Independence National HISTORICAL Park, which is small but does include several acres of outdoor area in central Philadelphia. There are many other National Historical Parks which don't appear here and belong in a separate quiz.

@isaac: It's Mt Ra*i*nier. And the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is called just that: naming landmarks within it isn't enough, just as `El Capitan' isn't enough for Yosemite and `Longs Peak' isn't enough for Rocky Mountain NP.

theres no arguing over the fact that the us has the best national park system in the world-mostly because of its variety, extensiveness, and age. its especially larger than other countries because of its national seashores, lakeshores, grasslands, forests, monuments, historic parks, and marine reserves.
