| @debbiedoesnothing and Nathan J.: Use of street names in the UK differs from that in the US, as far as I can see. In my limited experience, people in the US will refer to, say, Fleet Street as just `Fleet'. However, in the UK, it would *always* be `Fleet Street' and, if you ask for directions to Fleet, you'll get sent to a town in Hampshire. In the UK, the suffix is an integral part of the street's name; in the US, it's just a word hanging on the end. Quite often, in the UK, there'll be streets with the same name but different suffices in close proximity. Indeed, there used to be something of a fashion for building housing estates and giving all the streets the same name but with different suffices. They stopped doing that because it makes navigation difficult, which is annoying for most people and extremely unhelpful to the emergency services. |
