	@mkgrenwel: I disagree- without the team names, you might as well just guess every good hockey player ever. Of course, even in three minutes, you might guess all of them except the Bruins/Avalanche player, anyway. As it stands, I'm happy with my five- the only guy I missed was the first one, and I probably would've gotten him through guessing, but I was too happy about actually knowing the other ones to bother. Also, shouldn't the Oilers/Kings player have an asterisk or something, since his number has technically been retired by every team?

	Kicking, why do you say one might not guess the Bruins/Avalanche player? Is he not considered as great as the others? I don't really pay attention to hockey but I've always known who he was.

	You can't just put Messier because there was more than one in the league at the time (Eric played for the Avalanche). Just my guess

	@kicking: No, without the names, you might as well be rewarded for knowing the answers to the quiz. Maybe just giving one team as a hint would still give you a little direction without giving it all away? Also, what are you talking about saying Bourque isn't as notable as the others? He's widely considered one of the best defenseman of all time.

	@Brandon: Ray Bourque is considered one of the top defensemen of all time along with Paul Coffey, Doug Harvey, Bobby Orr. Bourque was one of the best defensemen of his generation. I put him in the same class as those guys. They all defined their eras.

	Giving the teams and the quiz being as long as it was time wise made it extremely easy for us hockey fans. But I can also see why you did what you did to give the hockey layperson a chance. It would be nice on some quizzes if the quiz taker had the option of taking an easy version of the quiz or a more difficult version where the time is shortened and give less information.

	@Bourque supporters: I agree completely- Bourque is one of the best defensemen ever, and one of the most important players of the past quarter-century. I'm a Bourque fan, and I'll even admit to tearing up when he finally lifted the Cup- and I'm a Devils fan! Believe me, I wasn't making the point that he isn't a great player. My point was that if you were to randomly think of hockey players' names, among the first ones to come to mind would probably be Gretzky, Howe, and Messier, but probably not be Bourque. Additionally, if the team names weren't given, it wouldn't be hard for a hockey fan to say to him/herself, "OK, Gretzky was huge in Edmonton and LA... Roy was huge in Montreal and Colorado." However, Bourque played 94 of his 1612 career NHL games for the Avs, so especially in regards to this quiz, someone who isn't a hardcore hockey fan would probably never think of him.

	My favourite Bourque moment was when he was still with the Bruins and they retired Phil Esposito's uniform number 7 which at that time happened to be Bourque's number as well. Bourque skated over to Espo in his number 7 took it off to reveal his new number of 77. Here he was a superstar in his own right showing respect towards those that played the game before him.

	if Ray Bourque isn't one of the first names you think of when you think about hockey then you just don't watch much hockey. you talk about those other guys and how they score more than Bourque...well that is because they were forwards. and for the record no defenceman in NHL history has scored more points than Bourque. i hate the Bruins, but any hockey fan will tell you that Ray Bourque is synonymous with hockey. especially with the Bruins team name being up there.

	Well I'm not a huge hockey fan and with both teams I knew them all right away..I would suggest just giving one team as a hint or allowing people to ask for the hints or not like they do with the super bowl quiz i think

	@drhaase: Others have said it, but the reasons people wouldn't put Bourque on this list are 1) He only played one or two seasons with the Avs; it's unusual for a team to retire a guy's number based on that. And 2) He's not a "household name" like the other five on this list.

	@Hugo_Whitfield: there's no doubt that Bourque is one of the best defenseman of all time, but you want the best defenseman of all time, you have to think Orr, Bourque, Potvin and Shore. Harvey is up there, as is Scott Stevens, Lidstrom and Al Macinnis. To say Paul Coffey is a good defenseman is to say playing defense is not part of the criteria. He was a great goal scorer and had a great offensive mind, yes, but that is where his abilities ended.

	The Blackhawks have not retired Orr's #4...and he never should have been on any other team besides the Bruins if it weren't for his a-hole of an agent Alan Eagleson. Eagleson was so despicable, the Hockey Hall of Fame took away his Hall of Fame induction status.

	@ Robkirst: You're exactly correct, here's what I found on wikipedia: Horton wore the number 7 while playing for the Leafs, the same number worn by King Clancy from 1931–32 to 1936–37. The team declared both Horton and Clancy honoured players at a ceremony on November 21, 1995, but did not retire the number 7 from team use; instead, it became an Honoured Jersey Number.[3] abiding by Leafs honours policy.[4] Horton wore number 2 in Buffalo (as Rick Martin already had the number 7), which was retired.

	I'm just gonna say this... Bourque's jersey should not be retired by the Avalanche. He was a second-pair defenceman with the team for a year and a half with Colorado. With Boston on the other hand...
