	My strategy: Type in #1, #2, and #5, and then start guessing major cities in the UK. I got 5, should've been 6 if I could've spelled this one city correctly.

	this is a odd quiz, seeing as there are quite a few university guides in the UK, the Times, Guardian and Telegraph all having different results and being highly regarded, plus the independent sources such as the student survey. For instance Loughborough won the Times award for best univeristy last year and according to this quiz are way down on the list and Manchester aren't even on it

	I checked the 'Good University Guide'...and they are missing the biggest University, the Open University. Fantastic research facilities. Incredible study meaterials. Amazingingly dedicated staff. ...and they were also barred from University Challenge because their students kept beating the traditional University students...despite being twice their age!...and I got my degree with them too!

	am surprised that aston, liverpool, and manchester failed to make the cut. still this quiz is too simpple to get an ok score on by typing in names of major uk cities.

	Quite coincidental, I've been preparing my UCAS forms so I have had to look round the universities and I know this list well. As Simon Rowland said, there are various UK university guides so it might be an idea to mention that it's The Times version

	onetheta, Warwick has been in the top ten of almost every list for years! How on earth can you criticise that? And Loughborough is hardly a joke! Where did you go to university? Ex-poly I suppose. Unless you've carried out research yourself or studied at all of these places, you are not qualified to pass judgment.

	@onetheta: The London colleges are universities in their own right; the Oxford and Cambridge colleges are not. The University of London is a federation consisting of several universities and other institutions.

	@God: They normalized the scores so the top institution would score 1000. Hence, every other institution's overall score is a measure of how the university compares to Oxford, rather than how it compares to some notional `perfect university'. At least they were kind enough not to normalize the other way to give the bottom institution a score of zero.

	@Bethannie: The guide is aimed at school-leavers so only considers British bricks-and-mortar universities. The OU is a fantastic institution but it doesn't meet the criteria for inclusion. As for University Challenge, well, the OU has a massive advantage: way more students than any other UK university and most of them are older so have more general knowledge. I've not heard that they've been banned (sounds like an urban legend to me) but it is worth bearing in mind that, when they won University Challenge in 1999 the average age of their students was 46 and at least one of them applied to study at the OU only so he could get on their University Challenge team.

	16/25 - not bad for someone who finished education at 18.@Bethannie - I tried "Open" as an answer as I know it's degrees are highly regarded. @Simon Rowland - I suspect the award Loughborough won was based on more than just academic standards.

	@onetheta "And some of these are hardly above joke status (East Anglia, Loughborough, again sorry)." Hey watch what you say! UEA's a fantastic university, I should know! But yeah, strange list. It seems to change with every poll released. I've seen polls published the same year as this one where UEA is as far down as the 60s.

	@davidr: the situation was that the Open University team was composed of former quiz show champions, which was judged to be against the spirit of the show. Since they had won legitimately, that couldn't be taken away, but they were banned from future years for essentially intentionally spoiling the show. I was surprised to see the absence of Manchester, Cardiff, Hull, all of them very good. Loughborough, for the record, is known as the very best sporting university in the country.

	I was surprised not to see Manchester and Leeds and for Lancaster to be on there instead. There's nothing wrong with Lancaster, just I wouldn't have thought it rated so high. I got offered a place there AND at 3 other universities on this list and I didn't go to any of them...sigh.

	i'm at number 20 but my brother, as always, beating me at number 12 :( and loughborough is a fantastic university especially for engineering and sport (where england cricket team do a lot of their work)

	was shocked manchester was not in there, i go to the rubbish manchester uni(man met) and always thought manchester was top 10 or 15. as for ppl saying its too uk centred there a lot of ppl for the uk who cant do some of the us college ones but we dont really complain the creators are just catering for a more global audience.

	I worked at Warwick for 4 years, my wife got her PhD there and my brother-in-law his degree, and I have been through the process of helping my daughter choose a university (Manchester) and a post-graduate course (York). My wife lectures at Coventry University. I have no idea what this list is judged on, but I would suspect that it is not on the attention to student welfare that a parent might expect. But that is just imho.

	I've studied at Exter university and am now studying at Birmingham so I'm glad they are both in the top 25 xxx
