fantastic quiz! A great list to memorize. How did Time never name John Glenn? Deep Throat would have been a fun choice too.

There are many substantive omissions from Time's list, but it's hard to conceive of the 20th century without Mao Zedong. One would think that Mandela would have made the list at some point, too.

Mandela did, sort of. He's one of "The Peacemakers" along with de Klerk, Arafat, and Rabin.

Still can't believe Hitler was one of them. In 1938, no less. Maybe part of the appeasing strategy or something... I still think naming the readers as the person of the year was a gay move.

ElDavo, I'm pretty sure the original intent of the title of person of the year was that it was to be awarded to the biggest newsmaker of the year, regardless of whether or not they were pretty much just evil. I'm pretty sure the reason Giuliani won in 2001 instead of bin Laden was because Time didn't want to upset people.

There are a TON of ****s on it, not just Hitler: Stalin, Khomeini, Bush, Bono, the other Bush, Nixon, the Popes, Faisal, Ted Turner, Gingrich, and You(well not all of You but a lot of You, I'm betting).

Wow, someone doesn't like Republicans. Hard to claim Bush I is an ****. Also, Bono is annoying, but unlike other entertainment bigmouths, he puts his money where his mouth is, and does a ton of fantastic work. Regardless of what Nixon did with the elections, he absolutely deserved to be named for getting the ball rolling with China. I still think ElDavo's post was intended to say that Hitler was on there because he did bad things, not because he's an ****. A lot of the people you listed as an **** (exceptions: Putin, Khomeini, You, Stalin) made the cut for doing positive things.

The quiz should accept Deng for Deng Xiaoping since it accepts surnames for all the other folks. And how exactly are the American Soldier and American Fighting-Man different? Either should catch both answers.

Every president from Roosevelt to Bush Jr., except Ford, and all of them were named while in office. Real creative, Time. But of the other hand, they WERE big newsmakers.

If you're looking for dislikable people in the list don't overlook Laval who was shot after WW2 by the French for being a traitor. He also stabbed the Abyssinians in the back in the 1930s.

Perhaps allow John Paul II or Jean Paul II, without needing the full title and all. Great quiz, though!

For those of you wondering why Hitler, or even George W. Bush, I offer an explanation. Time's person of the year does not have to be a benevolent person, just an influential person. Bad or good.

The quiz needs to accept Arafat, Rabin, de Klerk, or Mandela for 1993 - the Time article referred specifically to those four individuals as men of the year. Also needs to accept "Deng" for Deng Xiaoping.

Time has gotten cowardly. There was only one big name news maker in 2001 and it was Osama bin Laden. They were afraid to name him because idiots would mistakenly think being "Man of the Year" was necessarily something positive.

I love to be on my computer but any organization that names "The Computer" or anything else that is not even remotely human is dubious in my book. "The Computer", really?!?

@ensiform: It's not being cowardly. It's having class, decency, and respect. Not to mention that it might be bad for sales to slap "MAN OF THE YEAR" under a picture of someone who'd just killed 3,000 people.

how about accepting "Elizabeth" for "Elizabeth II"? It's pretty obvious that it isn't Elizabeth I.

They must have felt silly for making Hitler the person of the year when looking back on it, considering the events following him recieving that honor...
