6/6. New Orleans has had 4 (excluding the 1821-1845 "countries" on this list.)

So ... I typed in "Confederate States" and nothing happened. Then I typed in "Confederacy" and what popped up? "Confederate States of America." How does that make any sense?

People probably didn't see "1865-PRESENT" and thought the United States was too obvious.

Was typing CSA and ran out of time. For the record, however, I do think that 1 minute is enough time.

It's not the easiest quiz here. The easiest quiz here is the countries of Antarctica.

I should have looked more closely at the years. It would have taken me a lot less time to figure out CSA.

On most of the map quizzes, you only need to enter "USA" for the "United Stated," so some people may have skipped it when "USA" didn't work.

I really like how, for those among us who are super freaky and read way too much, there is a "secret" seventh pop-down answer. You can't leave it until last though, because since it's not one of the core answers the test will finish is the do the core six first. Tricky Sporcle.

3 years ago I would have failed, but going to college in Texas really helps, and yes, they even teach this at the college level.

Actually, there should be another hidden flag: that of the Tejano Republic of 1813. It is a solid green flag. If we have the Republic of the Rio Grande hidden, we should also have the Tejano Republic hidden.

As a note, if anybody is every visiting London, there is a "Republic of Texas Embassy" restaurant that is about 2 blocks from the old Texas Embassy (near the national gallery). It is a really cool place with really great food. You can also find a plaque at the old embassy sight about Texas.

So, entering "Confederate States of America" is not recognized, but putting in "Confederacy" is. That makes so much sense.

Just in case anyone doesn't already know, this is where the Six Flags amusement parks take their name from. Six Flags Over Texas is the original.

I only missed the Confederate States, which required some out of the box thinking. But the 1861-1865 should have been a really big obvious clue for me

With the exception of Mexico and the USA, I had to pretty much make educated guesses on this one. I kind of figured Spain would be one of them since Spain controlled all of the land first and Mexico ceded from them. France was just a lucky guess since I know France owned some of the land in what is the USA today. And Texas Republic was one of those 'What the hell..' kind of guesses. Man, I love history!

Maybe we could make this a "name that flag" quiz like Flags of Europe, etc. Of course, we should use the official contemporary flags of the CSA (more than one), France (fleurs-de-lys, not tricolor), Mexico, etc., to make it more of a sporting proposition, though not every set of stars in the U.S. flag.

There actually are a lot more than 6 flags (or 7). The Fredonian Republic was established briefly in Nacogdoches. I'm sure there were other shortlived efforts to nationalize the frontier.
