However, foreigners can play, as long as they qualify by living in England for four years, which is how Joyce and Hamilton have been eligible, along with players like Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Hick and Robin Smith. Once they've played for England, they would not have been eligible to play for their countries of birth until re-qualifying there. A similar situation applied to Kepler Wessels, who played for Australia while South Africa were suspended from Test cricket. He was given special permission to play for South Africa immediately when that country regained its Test status. |
