First and most important essential--positive mental attitude.

Given the various alternatives you can enter for many of the categories, why not allow simply "first aid"?

I think that you should also have a weapon of some kind such as a rifle to protect yourself from wild animals such as bears, wolves or wild boar.

I was trying to use sun block, perhaps make that work for sun protection also.

Perhaps you would want a positive mental attitude, a weapon, or a plant handbook, but the Mountaineers in the 1930s, whose list this quiz is on, did not. That said, because I'm all for documenting bonus answers: Communication is a bonus answer here. Anyone have any others?

Insect repellent is another optional one.

Why wouldn't you want a gun or something for protection against the wild animals that are going to be around to attack you?

Oddly hatchet/axe/hammer are NOT alternatives. Neither is rope. Sorry, if I'm going into the bush, I'm bringing all of those with me.

@Brandon: if you're in trouble, the most important thing to do is get out of trouble. Navigation will help you do that; most of the others just ways to deal with the trouble while you're in it.

I'd say hatchet/axe/hammer/rope qualify as tools.

I suppose it was just me being to philosophical and not practical enough when i was upset that it wouldn't accept 'knowledge' as an answer. After all, without a little know-how you're pretty sunk in the great out doors

9+1/10. I only missed #5 and might have gotten it if I were taking this in warmer weather.

Got 9; put tent but it wasn't accepted for emergency shelter. Hmmm.

if knife is acceptable as repair kit and tools, then tent should be as emergency shelter. Could argue that hat qualifies as sun protection too. I got 7 plus the bonus, plus tent and hat.

"Matches" and "Lighter" should be acceptable alternatives for fire. I mean, when you're thinking about the literal objects you carry with you, "fire" doesn't come to mind nearly as easily as the tools you use to create it.

having another person with you is the most essential way to ensure your safety in the outdoors. partner/person/friend should definitely be on the list. i would never go off hiking or camping by myself even if i had all of these essentials.

100% on first try, plus the 2 bonuses (unless there's more?) Thank you Monagacci(: Possibly add sleeping bag and a friend/family member?

Mobile phone should be allowed as the communication bonus answer. What Jordan said on the fire-front! Sounds weird to take fire with you lol. Took me ages to get "first aid" - not because it didn't spring to mind immediately, but because none of the following worked, and imo they should: Medikit, medical kit, bandages, medicine.

I would think a plan would also be on this list. sometimes, the survival necessities are not tangible

I've taken a few wilderness survival courses, and there I learned the three most important things for wilderness survival (which are coincidently called the 3 three's): 1. have shelter within 3 hours, 2. have water within 3 days, 3. have food within 30 days (I believe). I was just wondering why Nutrition happens to come before hydration, but then again this list was taken from a book so I guess there is validity within that.

i got 9 just by naming what i took on my last camping trip. Sun protection i wouldn't consider an essential, since sun strength varies when/where you go. i think the order is a little messed up (i.e. water after food) but otherwise good.

I would say that sun protection is an essential. The weather is anything but predictable and one day might be dark, cold and overcast and the next could be bright, hot sunshine. This applies for pretty much any temperate region.
