good quiz but i think it would have been better the other way around, you giving us the nickname and we give you the state.

That would just be an annoying version of "list the fifty states".

I noticed that it accepts Land of Lincoln for Illinois. Are there any other alternatives that people found?

In addition to Illinois, Wisconsin and Wyoming have alternatives. For Wisconsin, the word "Cheese" works, and for Wyoming, the word "Cowboy" works.

Also, Alabama accepts "Heart of Dixie".

Michigan should have "The Wolverine State" and "Winter Water Wonderland" as options, disregarding certain ecological facts.

Growing up in Virginia, the schools always taught us that Virginia was the "Old Dominion", but not the "Old Dominion State", because Virginia is not a state at all, but a commonwealth.

I'd suggest "Land of 10,000 Lakes" as an alternative to Minnesota, also; although personally I know it as the North Star state.

@Brad: I agree, but I think this quiz just put 'state' behind everything. Also, I thought Wisconsin was 'America's Dairyland?'

yes, Wisconsin is 'America's Dairyland" ...if I really wanted to complain I could say ND is also called (along with the Peace Garden State): The Roughrider state, Flickertail state and, Sioux state. if you really wanted to know, there is a list on wikipedia which tells me that each state has at least two or more nicknames for each. However...with what jess had to say, if I am correct that each of the bolded words on the list on wikipedia (search US state nicknames) is the official one, it has wisconsin as 'America's Dairyland' ....

Connecticut actually has two nicknames - it is also called the Nutmeg State. I was surprised landk of 10,000 lakes didn't work for Minnesota, and I agree with the others that Big Sky Country should work for Montana.

Just knowing the names of the State University teams was a big help! Yet Gophers wouldn't work for Minnesota and Jayhaks wouldn't work for Kansas; oh well.

Nutmeg state, land of 10,000 lakes, america's dairyland, and big sky country should all be acceptable for Connecticut, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Montana respectively and isn't Louisiana also called the Bayou state?

I know in Colorado we use The Mile-Hi State a lot more often than Centennial state, but I guess that works too.

Agree that Big Sky and Land of 10,000 Lakes should absolutely be accepted--those are the only nicknames for those states I've ever even learned!

Curse Sporcle's lack of carriage returns -- but here are some suggested alternatives: Colorado: Mile-High State, Rocky Mountain State... Connecticut: Nutmeg State... Louisiana: Bayou State... Minnesota: Land of 10,000 Lakes... Montana: Big Sky Country

These are all really arbitrary. I've lived in Wisconsin my whole life. "Badger State" isn't really our nickname, it's America's Dairyland.

States can have several nicknames, of course. For example, in Alabama we taught that Heart of Dixie is the preferred nickname of Yellowhammer state but both are nicknames and on here it has the Yellowhammer, but accepts Heart of Dixie

Pennsylvania's department of tourism keeps trying to push us as "the State of Independence." Which is lame because it's a bit of an oxymoron and because we're a commonwealth. Long story short, I'm glad we're still known as the Keystone State in this quiz; it's much cooler.

College sports fans could get several of these just by listing team names. Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Nebraska, North Carolina and Oregon all use their state nicknames as their team names, and you'll get California and West Virginia by typing the beginnings of their team names.

NCAA team names really help here. So do some license plates and commemorative state quarters. And I totally got Idaho because of the scene in Napoleon Dynamite where the principal tells Pedro that certain behavior is not OK "in the Gem State."
