I missed a bunch because I wasn't specific enough. I knew dogwoods were some state's flower but I didn't know there were different kinds.

Yeah I live in Virginia and knew it was dogwood, but not American Dogwood.

I think you should get "Saguaro cactus blossom" with just cactus blossom. I didn't have to specify 'Hawaiian' hibiscus or 'scarlet' carnation.

I live in Washington and I can't even spell our state flower. Even worse, my parents had a couple in our garden when I was a kid. Still can't spell it.

I just guessed all the names of flowers I had bought girlfriends at one time or another and ended up with 10. Oh, that and I knew MDs since I reside there.

I worked and worked to figure out how to spell saguaro cactus but gave up because I figured I was wrong. And I did know my home state of Washington's was the Rhododendron. I spent SO much time trying to spell it (my mom always called them rhodies) and then I didn't know it was "Coastal" sheesh

you give us "sego lily" for "lily." but not "wood violet" for "violet," and others of the same.

@Speedbird: In the U.S., each state has an official flower. It's great fun - or a waste of time, depending on your perspective. Regardless, it's great fodder for a Sporcle quiz.

I was born in and have lived in Iowa for 28 of my 30 years, and I've never heard or seen our state flower referred to as the wild "prairie" rose. We always just call it the wild rose. :(

Way too specific here. I'd compare this to the state birds quiz, where, for example, tpying "thrush" gets you "hermit thrush". Do we really need to put "American dogwood" (I'm from VA and didn't know that either).

For VA you need to make it Dogwood.

I cannot believe the flowers that are not on this list: orchid, tulip, daisy, poinsettia, hydrangea, buttercups, etc. Obviously this is not Sporcle's fault, but I am really surprised! These are common flowers that most people have seen growing all over the US.

The state flower that is the most obvious once you have seen it is probably Massachusetts'.

Just because I grew up there and happen to know this bit of trivia: An Ohio politician named William McKinley wore a carnation in his lapel at every public appearance and he kept a vase of them in his office. They were so ubiquitous that they became one of his symbols as he became Governor of Ohio and then President. So, after he was assassinated, Ohio made the carnation its official flower.

@ Seeta - I was going to say the same thing, except I'm a lot older than you. I've never heard it called anything but the wild rose.

@Seeta- Same here (although i'm only 17 so ive lived here 17 years). not once have i heard it referred to with the prarie. interesting fact, but just wild rose needs to be acceptable.

I had to google because I get obsessed like that - among others, both Iowa State U and the state legislature when they adopted the state flower in 1897 refer to it as simply "Wild Rose." :P

I just guessed every flower I knew. This could be a future game, similar to the dog breeds game. Why not have a "identify the flower" game in which you show pictures and have to name them?

I second theGrit's comment -- growing up in Iowa, we were always taught it just as "wild rose," not a "prairie" in sight.
