"Rhode Island Red" should work... didn't realize you had to type in "chicken" as well. Plus, rofl at the number of answers that pop up when you type in "cardinal"!

Dear Utah, Please try again. This time, choose a bird that doesn't have some other state in its name.

Finch and lark don't seem to suffice; perhaps the meadowlark isn't a lark or the goldfinch not a finch; and I don't mean that sarcastically because I just don't know.

Western Meadowlark and Cardinal give you 13 out of 50. And considering the Meadowlark gives you 6 of those states, it's really a shame how few people guessed it.

@sharkscene: No, the meadowlarks aren't larks (Alaudidae), nor even very closely related. They're in the Icteridae — in English, they're blackbirds.
On the other hand, right now typing "lark" gets you the lark bunting, and that isn't a lark either, it's a sparrow (Emberizidae).

@davidr and retsyn: Utah chose its state birds for historical reasons: in 1848 a "plague of locusts" (actually an irruption of mormon crickets) that was destroying crops was controlled by an influx of California gulls, Larus californicus. I applaud Utah for choosing a bird that actually means something to the state, rather than following the more common path and choosing a generic backyard bird that has no particular connection to any state, as about half the states have done.
Sources are inconsistent in how they denote the bird. It is generally understood that the birds in 1848 were California gulls and it's usually listed that way on unofficial lists, but officially (according to Utah code section 63-13-5.5(2)) the state bird is simply the "sea gull". The state's own website splits the difference by calling it the "California Seagull," which is not the correct name of the species but does get the point across.

"Northern Cardinal", which is the proper name of the only cardinal species found in the US, should give you all the states that have "cardinal". Likewise for "Northern Mockingbird".

How about add Wood Thrush which is the official bird of DC -- that would fox the 50-staters. Also, "Lark" should not trigger Colorado to be filled in with Lark Bunting, which is not a lark but rather a close relative to sparrows (Fringillidae)!

Shouldn't the "Blue Hen of Delaware" appear when you type in "chicken"?
