Finland and Poland should at the very least be bonus answers since they were part of Soviet territory at one time or another. Got all the answers in 36 seconds; good quiz.

I wonder what percentage had the same breakdown as me--14/15, missing the headslappingly obvious one (Eurasia).

Forgot Russia the first time as well. 14/15 then 15/15. Russia is still technically part of the soviet union but with a new name though...

@Observer: Russia is not `still technically part of the Soviet Union' because the Soviet Union was dissolved in December 1991. If you're thinking of the Commonwealth of Indepedent States, that's not even remotely comparable.

@mr badman: as far as i know finland and the soviet union didn't get along so well (although the SU did have a lot of influence in finland). anyway, finland wasn't a "satellite state". that is only true for the warsaw pact countries (and probably yugoslavia and mongolia, maybe even north korea).

Got all 15 but wasn't thinking Russia either. Eventually the Eurasia gave it away since only Russia and Turkey span both.

Can someone make their mind up whether you can have Kazakhstan spelt as Kazakstan? It would be nice to have some consistency. To have the latter acceptable in the countries of the world quiz but not here is ludicrous.

@Vernon G.: Not true. Three other former Soviet Republics also span the border of Europe and Asia (the first in central Asia and the second and third in the Caucasus).

@Burton dW.: No. Poland was never *Soviet* territory: the eastern half of Poland was previously part of the Russian Empire but that was lost during World War I, before the formation of the USSR. Finland actually ceded territory to the Soviet Union after World War II as part of a reparations deal that I'll never understand. (USSR invades Finland; USSR gets kicked out of Finland; Finland ends up ceding territory and paying huge compensation.)

Pretty easy if you've done the other geography quizzes a million times, but it definitely helps me with the organization. Maybe a "countries of the former Czechoslovakia" quiz? will follow soon?

*Loved* this quiz. 15/15 in 46 seconds. It does not hurt that I've been using the Baltics, the Caucasus states, and the 'stans to chunk up information for the other geography quizzes.

Got them all, but didn't some of them go by different names as Soviet Republics? Belarus was Byelorussia, Moldova was Moldavia, the central Asian republics were called "Kazakh SSR", "Uzbek SSR" etc rather than -stan, and Russia was technically the RSFSR.

@Chaim M.K.: Yes, they went by slightly different names when they were part of the USSR. But the quiz asks for countries that were formerly Soviet republics so the modern forms are required here.
