these guys are often taken for granted. the pressure they are put under is unbelievable yet we kill them after they blow a save. 62 saves is remarkable.

62 saves is very good but K-Rod only got that number because of his team. They had to be ahead enough times late in the game for him to get a chance. That means that a closer who posts high save numbers usually comes from a good team.

Rod Beck was a great player. May he rest in peace.

@Art Vandaley: Possibly, but this isn't a "Coach K" situation where the abbreviation is to spell an impossibly difficult name. Rodriguez (especially for a baseball fan) seems pretty reasonable.

Yeah, a lot of closers would have had 62 saves in the same situation as Rodriguez.

I would say more people call him krod than fransisco rodriguez, that is my reasoning. I completely forgot about the #3 guy

I was just watching the Brewers-Mets game where K-Rod got the save and they showed like half of this list on TV

I think you should put MLB in title of game. 'Most Saves in a Season' is extremely ambiguous as far as titles go, it could be applicable to dozens of other sports.

The save is the most worthless stat in all of sports. If these guys are so good, they should be coming in the game with no outs and runners on in a tie game in the 7th inning, instead of when you are already leading in the ninth.

@MovieDynamic: Thats a pretty racist thing to say. If I were black I would find that really offensive.

The asterisks are for what? It's not steroids (or is it?) so I'm clueless.

krod gets the save in a 1-0 game today, and tomorrow he'll get the save in a 10-9 win since suppan is pitching

interesting that a guy like john franco (who is, i think, third in all time saves) never had this many in a season. not that i'm knocking franco; its more of a reflection on his remarkable consistency than anything.

I would like to reinforce that Phillies fans understand baseball, and the save is indeed a silly metric

I'm a little surprised that Thigpen was guessed so low since his name was mentioned an awful lot last season during K Rod's quest for the record.

19/21. on 3.6%: with what team did he rack up 48? he wasn't even on my radar. @Mattitude... he played for ARZ in 2007 and was Lights Out!

@let.it.go That was the year he pitched for the Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers. (Stupid Jim Bowden traded the Reds' only rep to the All Star game days before the game took place and weeks after conning Shaw into signing a contact extension)

Yay for Chief! Can't believe I missed Hoffman. Closers are overrated though. Any GM with a lick of sense would take a quality starter over a flashy closer (K-Rod) any day.

It's funny that these guys command big bucks when I bet a strong bullpen overall, where you have a 'closer by committee' would probably suffice just as well. The only difference is, a few million bucks and lack of a identified 'Closer'.

Still hard to believe that Armando Benitez is on the list. I still cringe when I think of the home run he served to Marquis Grissom in game 2 of the 1997 ALCS.
