I hope this is a series of quizzes. Or why the hell else would you just do silver slugging pitchers...

Hernandez only works if you type it exactly with the accent mark as Hernández. This should definitely be fixed.

Mike Hampton won 5 consecutive silver sluggers for 4 different teams.

It's my dream that one day the AL can get rid of the DH an we can have BOTH leagues on this quiz.

That would have been a mean feat, for a minor leaguer to win a major league award.

i find the premise of this award a little strange: it's like awarding the kicker a place on the NFL all-defensive team because he's the best tackling kicker in the league. yeah, tackling is part of his job, but he'd be the best tackler out of a lousy bunch. on a different note, i was surprised rick ankiel never made got this award.

Bartleby, the award is not solely given to pitchers. It's like the gold glove in that it is awarded to the best batter in each league at each position. Since the pitcher bats in the national league, one is awarded to them.

I agree with Mr. Negative, just having one for pitchers while ignoring the other 10 positions is dumb. @The, I far prefer AL rules to the NL, pitchers hitting and the double switch should be abolished across the board.

Rick Ankiel only had one full season in the majors as a pitcher before he was moved to the outfield.

Why are less and less quizzes listing their sources? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Silver_Slugger_Award_winners_at_pitcher This helps people learn what the subject is about and they get to expand their knowledge.

I have an honest question for baseball fans: I'm new to following baseball, so I got some, but with this award, is this something seriously sought after by pitchers? I mean, when a regular outfielder or infielder gets a silver slugger, it says something big about there game. When a pitcher wins it, is it just sort of an aside, or is it a real accomplishment?

It isn't that big of a deal overall. But pitchers who bat well take pride in their hitting. If you could choose between two ptichers with similiar ERAs and one hit .270 and the other hit .120, who would you take?

The Cubs use Zambrano as a pinch hitter...and he generally hits well over the Mendoza line, which is more than you can say for most pitchers, and a lot of bench players.

@fatbeard: For pitchers, it is a bit of a novelty prize. Its not an award that pitchers necessarily aspire to attain, although I'm sure most would be overjoyed to receive any kind of recognition for their hitting.

Ernest: It probably says that you were a huge baseball nut in the 80's, or are just a stat freak. I once read an article on great hitting pitchers, and Rhoden was prominently featured. Some things just stick.

@springmom: Agreed, Zambrano (albeit one very temperamental dude) is a beast of a hitter, especially as far as pitchers are concerned. I always like to see pitchers come in as pinch hitters, especially in interleague play. It makes everyone in the AL go 'huh'? By the way, Cards and Cubs fans can be decent... every now and then. :)

I believe Rhoden is also a scratch golfer. ... Fatbeard, the Silver Slugger is not that seriously sought after by anyone. It's always been a somewhat marginal award, and is probably even moreso now that The Sporting News is just a decaying corpse of its former self. I'm sure players appreciate it, but NO ONE thinks "I hope Joe Blow can make a run for the Silver Slugger this season!" or some such.

I'm surprised this hasnn't turned into AL v. NL rules... Anyway, one of the greatest things I've ever watched was Felix Hernandez' grand slam off of Johan Santana. Classic.

I dont care whether the AL gets rid of the DH or if the NL starts using it, just as long as both leagues are the same.

I guarantee Carlos Zambrano has been seriously seeking to win the Silver Slugger every year since he came into the league. I'd say he's more seriously pursuing it than he is the Cy Young, most years. I can't speak for any other pitcher, but Z is one guy whose first love is clearly hitting.

Definitely prefer NL rules. Creates more strategy, more subtlety to the game, rather than just a longball contest. I'm not even sure what AL Managers are supposed to be doing.
