| @cwpiper - yes, it's Dunbartonshire now, and it was in the past, but it has also been (officially) Dumbartonshire or the County of Dumbarton. Indeed, it began as Dumbartonshire. During the 18th century, both versions were used, although the official title remained Dumbartonshire. During the 19th century, a number of official bodies used Dunbartonshire (including the county constabulary), but the first county council (set up in 1889), was known as Dumbartonshire CC. In 1914 it started calling itself Dunbartonshire CC, although that was only enshrined in law in 1947 (and thus, for a period of time, official documents addressed to it said Dumbartonshire CC, while official documents addressed by it said Dunbartonshire CC!). Darn confusing, ain't it? I'm only used to it because I work for West Dunbartonshire Council, within the museum service. |
